خذْ العدس المشتهى مأكلاً

خذْ العدس المشتهى مأكلاً

وكن يا أخا الجود نعم الأكيل

وكن يا أخا الجود نعم الأكيل

Take the desired lentils as food.

Take the desired lentils as food,

And be, O brother of generosity, an excellent diner.

And be, O brother of generosity, the best eater,

فلو لم تكن عندِي المعتلى

فلو لم تكن عندِي المعتلى

لما جدت منه بهذا الجليل

لما جدت منه بهذا الجليل

For had you not stood so high in my esteem,

For if I did not have the afflicted one,

I would not have bestowed this generous portion of it.

I would not have found this great one from him.

وأقسم لولاك يا سيدي

وأقسم لولاك يا سيدي

عدمت الصديق وحقّ الخليل

عدمت الصديق وحقّ الخليل

And I swear, were it not for you, my lord,

And I swear, if not for you my master,

I would have lacked a friend—by the Friend's honor!

I would miss the friend and the right of the intimate.
