قفْ ببابِ العلا وقل يا كتابي

قفْ ببابِ العلا وقل يا كتابي

عن لسانِي قول الخويدم حقَّا

عن لسانِي قول الخويدم حقَّا

Stand at the gate of eminence and say, O my letter,

Stand at the door of knowledge, and say, "O my soul,

In my voice, the humble servant's words in truth:

Speak with the tongue of the wise, and say what is true,

أنا عبدٌ مكاتبٌ غير أني

أنا عبدٌ مكاتبٌ غير أني

لستُ أخشى من مالكِ الرقّ عتقا

لستُ أخشى من مالكِ الرقّ عتقا

I am a slave under a manumission contract, yet I

I am a slave working to buy my freedom, though

Do not fear being freed by the master of bondage.

I do not fear being freed by the Owner of all souls."
