قالتْ أريد من طبيخٍ قدرةً
وكثرتْand multiplied حاجاتهاher demands وأوْغلَتand she went too far
وكثرتْ حاجاتها وأوْغلَت
She said, “I want a pot of cooked food,”
And her demands multiplied, and she went too far.
فقلتُso I said هذيthis قدرةٌa pot ياO ستَّناour lady
فقلتُ هذي قدرةٌ يا ستَّنا
منfrom قبلِbefore أنthat تمسُّهاtouches it النارthe fire غلتboiled; grew costly (a pun)
من قبلِ أن تمسُّها النار غلت
So I said, “This pot, our lady,
Has boiled—grown costly—before the fire has touched it.”
