then assailed lions and gazelles.

She smiled, revealing a reluctant pearl,
until I wept tears of pure gold over them.
Until I wept for it with yearning.

A supple beauty: I seek the full moons to glimpse her face,
Ghazala, reveal your full moons, though
since my only share of it is the sight.
My share of them is but a glance.

A Turkish beauty, whose cheek is ascribed to Qan,
Turkia, whose cheeks outshine vermilion dye,
alas for my infatuation with its deep crimson!
My sobriety from them is stained crimson.

And beauties that blossom and outlast their era,
such, too, is a garden of many hues.
Just as the meadow dons manifold hues.

Have doused it with scalding sorrow.

If her rejection was due to my grey hair,

Then her glances indulged me for so long.

I intentionally reaped the fruit of sins
and did what my devil had never imagined.

And I deliberately gathered some of the fruit of sins,
And I milked this life for half my sustenance,
when I saw that pardon was the offender's lot.
Only to find its cream a fleeting possession.

And I milked this age for all the portions of its life,
I probed the natures of the noble and found
and found their cream to be a fleeting pleasure.

A King whose name makes branches moan
no equal in excellence to King al-Mu’ayyad.
As pulpits chant his praises.

A king whose name set the pulpits swaying,
Dignified, beloved like dew if veiled,
until they recalled their old haunts as branches.
I see floods surge from his clouds.
