قل للذي قد كنت معترفاً
منfrom بحرthe sea of أنعمهhis favors ومغترفاand drawing from it
من بحر أنعمه ومغترفا
Say to him whose favors I had acknowledged,
And from whose sea of bounty I had drawn:
عجزfell short اجتهادearnest effort الشكرgratitude عنof مننٍfavors
عجز اجتهاد الشكر عن مننٍ
قدّمتهاyou bestowed them عندِيupon me فياso, O أسفاmy sorrow
قدّمتها عندِي فيا أسفا
My efforts at gratitude have fallen short of the favors
You have bestowed on me—so alas,
إنif كنتyou are لاnot تسديbestow إليَّupon me يداًa favor
إن كنت لا تسدي إليَّ يداً
حتَّىuntil أقومI render بشكرِthanks for ماwhat سلفاhas gone before
حتَّى أقوم بشكرِ ما سلفا
If you will bestow no favor on me
Until I give thanks for what has gone before!
