ففيso in كلevery بيتverse للثناfor praise صوتthe voice of نائحa mourner
Poetry wept for the days of hopes and gifts;
The poetry wept during the days of Mina and the dirges
so in every verse of praise there is a mourner's voice.
In every house there was a voice wailing in grief
وغاضتand ebbed بحورthe seas of المكرماتgenerous deeds وطوحتand flung away
بأهلthe people of الرجاhope والقصدand quest أيديthe hands of الطوائحcalamities
And the seas of generosity ebbed, and swept away
The seas of virtues swelled and surged
were those who hoped and sought, by the hands of calamity.
And the hands of misfortunes assaulted the people of hope and good intentions

علمناwe knew بأنَّthat الشهبthe stars تحتbeneath الصفائحthe stone slabs
And when the face of the horizon darkened with sorrow,
And when the horizon was shrouded in sorrow
we knew that the stars lay beneath the stone slabs.
We knew that the shooting stars were under the horizons

O rain of the clouds, join me in mourning the loss of lords,
May Muzain bring me joy for the loss of masters
with tears overflowing upon people, like their bounty.
With tears flowing like theirs for people

قريضpoetry لشادٍfor a singer أوor سرورjoy لفارحfor one rejoicing
After the sons of Shādī, now dwelling in the earth,
After the Bani Shad who now reside in the earth
is there verse for a singer, or joy for one rejoicing?
Is there condolence for Shad or joy for one who rejoices?
أبعدafter? ملوكthe kings of العلمlearning والبأسand valor والندىand bounty
تشبkindles العلىglory نارthe fire of القرىhospitality والقرائحand poetic gifts
After the kings of learning, valor, and bounty,
After the kings of knowledge, valor and brilliance
can glory still kindle the fire of hospitality and poetic inspiration?
The fires of tombs and pyres are ignited
أماindeed والذيby Him who أخلىemptied حمىthe sanctuary of الملكkingship منهمُof them

Indeed, by Him who emptied kingship's sanctuary of them,
By the One who emptied the sanctuary of their kingdom
and filled the outlines of the tombs with lofty glory:
And eternalized the statutes of tombs
لئنif indeed أوحشواthey left desolate منهمwithout them بيوتthe houses of مقامهمtheir dwelling

if their dwelling houses have become desolate without them,
If they made their homes desolate by their absence
the verses of praise have surely become desolate without them.
They made the homes of praises even more desolate

A cooing bird's voice wounds my heart now they are gone,
The voice of a mourning poet wounds my heart
recalling to me the days of hands that showered bounty.
Reminding me of the time of outpouring hands
فياso, O فرخfledgling of ضعفيmy weakness حيثnow that صرتI have become فريسةprey
وصارand have become حمامُthe doves of الأيكthe thicket فيamong الطيرbirds جارحيmy bird of prey
Alas for my fledgling weakness, now that I have become prey,
So my weak self became easy prey
and the thicket's doves, among birds, have become my predators.
And the doves of the valleys became my predators
تلاfollowed فقدthe loss of إسماعيلIsmāʿīl فقدthe loss of محمدMuḥammad
فياso alas للأسىfor sorrow منfrom فادحa crushing blow بعدafter فادحa crushing blow
The loss of Muḥammad followed the loss of Ismāʿīl;
The loss of Ismael preceded the loss of Mohammed
ah, what sorrow—a crushing blow after a crushing blow!
Oh what great agonies from one catastrophe to another!

And both are gone: the pupil of my eye does not hold back
They are gone and no human consoles me with a grasp
weeping, nor does any man of words toil.
No human eases my pain with words

As though the firesticks of bounty had never kindled from them
As if the flints of virtue did not shine from them
the radiance of virtues against which no detractor has a word.
No words of integrity or chiding

As though no dove, collared with favors, had ever stood
As if the endowed were not gathered
at the gate, singing praise with a songbird's song.
Singing loudly at the gates

Take provisions, O guest of noble bounty, and depart
Take provisions, oh guest of generosity, and journey on
with lamentation, for the abodes of gifts stand deserted.
In grief, for the meadows of consolation have become desolate

Whether you drain away tears or journey away with camel-mounts,
I shed tears or perhaps I marched on
God, what anguish in either case for one who departs!
In both cases, it is agonizing sorrow

كأنas though لمnot يجبanswered فيهاwithin them المنىhopes صوتthe voice of صائحa caller
My soul be ransom for the abodes of bounty, whose garden has withered,
By my soul, the abode of virtue - its garden is desolate
as though hopes had never answered a caller's cry within them.
As if no wishes were answered within it or voices wailing

My soul be ransom for the stranger far from home, whose bier returns
By my soul, a stranger in the land and the procession returns
to his bereaved land, a stranger to the mourning women.
To its bereaved homeland, strangers in their crying

My soul be ransom for one like a branch in glory's spreading tree;
By my soul, like a branch in the lofty palm tree
Time struck him and destroyed him with a scorching wind.
Cast off by time without notice

Time struck his branches after he had spread his shade
Its branches spread shade
over every morning and evening wayfarer among the supplicants.
Onto every gentle and pure soul

And he beautified our world by spreading kindness,
It beautified our world by emanating grace
and veiled its hateful things and ugliness.
And covered over its ugliness and disgraces

And he governed his land's subjects, and was obeyed
And ruled over its subjects who obeyed him
beside the ʿĀṣī by the will of every headstrong soul.
While the defiant were tempted by its sway

And he gave the bounty of clouds in a time of hardship
It gave generously in times of hardship
that offered excuses to miserly souls.
Fulfilling the hopes of optimistic souls

فمنso some are أعزلunarmed مثلlike السماكSimāk ورامحand spear-bearing
And his reign united forbearance and valor:
His kingdom married wisdom and valor
some unarmed, some spear-bearing, like Simāk.
So who can isolate the elite and the courageous?

And from his forebears he intoned the chapters of glory,
It recited the brilliant chapters of its ancestry
their endings joined to their beginnings.
With interlocking introductions and conclusions

And he rose, aspiring to gather praiseworthy deeds;
Aspiring to gather all praise
so, by God, no aspirant's resolve could match him.
None can equate to its mighty determination
وواللهand by God ماnot نقضيwe repay حقوقwhat is owed to محمدMuḥammad

And by God, we do not repay what is owed to Muḥammad
By Allah, we cannot fulfill the rights of Mohammed
when we praise him with worthy words.
Even by singing his praises

And if the rain could offer ransom for its friend,
If the plentiful rain could sacrifice its patron
it would redeem a worthy man of Shādī's house with an unworthy one,
It would ransom Salah of the Bani Shad

and turn death away from one overflowing with kindness, for whom
It dispelled harm from the abundance of righteousness
the dearest place in all the worlds was a wanderer's pasture.
The most honorable position in the world - meadow for strolling

It is death: if valor and bounty could turn it back,
It is death, even if a mighty warrior confronts it
the virtues of his hand would have repelled it within his breast.
His claws can tear through ribs

It is death, no deserter can escape it
nor one pressing on in the bounding strides of a swift steed,
Nor one who journeys smoothly through the waves

The sons of Ayyūb suffice as an admonition to mankind,
The Bani Ayyub sufficed people with lessons
though their mouths have fallen silent in the tombs,
Even if their mouths were silenced in the graves

The ascent to their demise is towards the horizon of their throne
toward which no aspiring gaze had ever risen.
While no ambitious sight could aspire so high
