وفي بيت غيري من نداك يسار

People say, as my verse goes unrewarded,

while another’s house holds riches from your bounty:

ألم تر بيت الفقر يجْفى ويجتوى

ألم تر بيت الفقر يجْفى ويجتوى

وبيت الغنى يهدَى له ويزار

وبيت الغنى يهدَى له ويزار

“Have you not seen how poverty’s house is shunned and loathed,

while wealth’s house is given gifts and visited?”
