تعجَّب الناس في صمتي وقد ذكرت

سلمى وقالوا تسلَّى قلب هيمان

سلمى وقالوا تسلَّى قلب هيمان

People marveled at my silence, though mention had been made of

People wondered at my silence, though I mentioned

Salma, and they said, “A lovesick heart has found solace.”

Salma, and they said, "A heart smitten is consoled"

وحارَ دمعي في عيني فقال فتىً

وحارَ دمعي في عيني فقال فتىً

أقسمت بالقدسِ ما ذي عين سلوان

أقسمت بالقدسِ ما ذي عين سلوان

And my tears pooled in my eye, so a young man said:

And my tears were confused in my eyes, so a youth said

“I swear by Jerusalem: this is no spring of Silwan.”

"I swear by the Holy City, these are no eyes of Solomon!"

إن أفقرتنيَ من صبرِي المهى فندا

إن أفقرتنيَ من صبرِي المهى فندا

قاضي القضاة عن السادات أغناني

قاضي القضاة عن السادات أغناني

If the oryxes have robbed me of my patience, then the bounty

If the beloved stripped me of my patience, she who gives

Of the Chief Judge has enriched me beyond need of other lords.

The Judge of judges compensated me from the generous ladies

للعلم والجود تاج إن أصغ مدحاً

للعلم والجود تاج إن أصغ مدحاً

فكم هداني إلى درٍّ وهاداني

فكم هداني إلى درٍّ وهاداني

He is a crown for learning and generosity; if I fashion praise,

For knowledge and generosity, a crown - if I heeded praise -

It is because he has so often guided me to pearls and given me gifts.

How it guided me to goodness and guided me!

وفي الولا والثنا كم قلتُ في مدحِي

وفي الولا والثنا كم قلتُ في مدحِي

ما بيت سلمان هذا بيت حسَّان

ما بيت سلمان هذا بيت حسَّان

And in devotion and acclaim, how often I have said in my praise:

And in intimacy and estrangement, how much I said in my praise:

“This is no verse of Salman; this is a verse of Hassan.”

"This house of Salman is no house of Hassaan!"

فليهنه العيد في عزٍّ وفي نعم

فليهنه العيد في عزٍّ وفي نعم

وللأنام بهِ والعيِ عيدان

وللأنام بهِ والعيِ عيدان

So may the feast gladden him amid glory and blessings,

So let the feast rejoice in might and bounty

And for mankind, he and the feast day make two feasts.

And for the people, by it, two feasts!

لا فرقَ بين ضحايا أو عدًى نحرت

لا فرقَ بين ضحايا أو عدًى نحرت

فإنَّ أعداه والأنعام سيَّان

فإنَّ أعداه والأنعام سيَّان

There is no difference between sacrificial beasts and slaughtered foes,

I see no difference between sacrifices or transgressions slaughtered

For his enemies and livestock are alike.

For enemies and cattle are equal
