O you who ask me in Damascus about my circumstances,

Stop and listen to the idle man's story.

And cease listening to my love verses and my infatuation:

This is no time for love and love lyrics.

All day, from one man's door to another's,

    I strive—by your father's life—as Ẓilāl strove.

I gain nothing from that, except that

My spleen has grown lighter from so much walking.

I pursue work and abandon seclusion,

Then return with neither my learning nor my deeds.

And when a source of livelihood changes, and I seek for myself

Companions, I find those companions like a mirage.

    This age has no servant

Through whom affairs are settled, save my mithqal.

Do you think this age will help me with an office,

With which I may shield my face from begging?

Saturn is conjoined with my need, and already bent

Is my back with worry, like the curve of the letter dāl.

What harm would it do Ismail, succor of the hopeful,

If he shielded me from these circumstances

Through an accepted intercession that makes 'wealth'

The predicate of the subject 'hope,' at once?

Am I not a sapling of his hands' dew? How, then, should not

The plantings be revived by a copious downpour?

O master, whose benefactions have embraced all humankind

With recurring gifts of kindness and bounty,

Beyond your thirst-quenching steady rain, there is no rain

To which those of scant means may complain of thirst.

    أنهى قضيّته ورأيك عالي

    This is the complaint of a sufferer crying for help;

He has submitted his case, and your judgment is lofty.
