O ocean of bounty and learning,

And O beneficent one to those who hope!

And you whose palm is more bountiful than rain,

And whose speech is more verdant than the meadow:

What do you think of your servant now—how wretched

His condition, how abject and contemptible!

Every dawn seeks to slaughter me with cold,

And that is why it cries, "God is greatest!"

And whenever I complain of cold, it clothes me

In a garment of it—how much harsher and more dreadful!

My body's blueness and the whitening of snows

Have clothed me in torment's robe, exposed for all to see.

What snow! The earth has gone gray with it in appearance,

While my joints have aged from it in truth.

    هكذا يندف الغريب المقتر

    You card the cotton as a lesson, though it is a resident;

Thus is the impoverished stranger carded.

How strange it is! My body complains of the cold

In its presence, while my heart complains of heat.

It grew colder; were it to take to poetry,

We would call it al-Salah, or an even better poet.

Do not tell me, "You have described your plight too much,"

For the hardship I suffer is greater still.

So give alms and send a basket of charcoal:

Indeed, my charcoal is gone, and my bellows have changed.

Bring it, like youth to the eye, to quell

The cold's fury with its heat, when it blazes.

And if ever winter glows like embers in speech,

It receives from the basket something fiercer and more fiery.

And hasten to grant this wish, for I cannot bear,

In my frail condition, to have it delayed.

Your servant wrote these lines while in bed,

And not everything that flowed from him is to be told.
