يا رب أسألك الغنى عن معشرٍ
غضبواthey grew angry وكافواand repaid بالجفاءwith coldness تردديmy repeated visits
غضبوا وكافوا بالجفاء ترددي
O Lord, I ask You to free me from dependence on my circle—
O Lord, I ask You to spare me dependence on people
They grew angry and repaid my repeated visits with cold rebuff.

قالواthey said كرهناwe hated منهfrom him مدّstretching out لسانهhis tongue
قالوا كرهنا منه مدّ لسانه
واللهby God ماnot كرهواthey hated سوىexcept مدّstretching out اليدthe hand
والله ما كرهوا سوى مدّ اليد
They said, “We disliked the way he stretched out his tongue.”
They said, “We hated how he stretched out his tongue.”
By God, they disliked nothing but his stretching out his hand.
By God, they hated nothing but the stretching out of the hand.
