أمستخبراً بالشامِ عن كنه حالتي

أمستخبراً بالشامِ عن كنه حالتي

ألم ترني مستبشراً بعد أحزاني

ألم ترني مستبشراً بعد أحزاني

O inquirer in al-Sham about my true condition,

I asked a questioner in Damascus about the essence of my state

Have you not seen me rejoicing after my sorrows?

Did you not see me become cheerful after my sorrows?

وقد كنت أرعى النجم همًّا وخيفةً

وقد كنت أرعى النجم همًّا وخيفةً

فها أنا قد أمسيتُ والنجم يرعاني

فها أنا قد أمسيتُ والنجم يرعاني

And I used to watch the star in anxiety and fear;

I used to shepherd the star with anxiety and fear

So here I am at evening, and the star watches over me.

Yet here I am, while the star is now shepherding me
