O bird in the sanctuary, singing of charms,
O bird singing of passions to the feverish,
You yourself have garlanded people's necks with favors.
You have adorned people's necks with favors,
كأنهاas though they were عنfrom وزيرthe vizier of الملكthe king مخبرةreporting
عنfrom جابرٍJabir عنfrom عطاʿAta عنfrom سعدSaʿd عنfrom حسنHasan
As though they were reporting from the king's vizier,
As if reporting on the king's minister,
From Jabir, from ʿAta, from Saʿd, from Hasan.
On Jabir, on Atta, on Saad, on Hasan.
يهوىhe loves المعاليlofty attainments ولاand does not يهوىlove ثراءwealth يدٍa hand
كأنهas though he were النبعthe nabʿ tree طلاَّعاًrising high علىupon القننthe peaks
He loves lofty attainments, and does not love riches in hand,
He loves the high ranks, and covets no wealth of hand,
Like the nabʿ tree, rising high upon the peaks.
As if he were the spring appearing on the meadows.

O seal of the most generous viziers, and O
O seal of the most generous ministers, and
Mighty lord of Egypt, and O traveler along the established paths.
Dear one of Egypt, walking in the ways.
حجبتyou were veiled عزَّاout of honor وتوقيراًand reverence وماyet not حجبتwere veiled
عنَّاfrom us أياديكyour favors فيin سرٍّsecret ولاnor علنpublic
You were veiled out of honor and reverence, yet not veiled
You have veiled might and reverence, yet you did not
From us were your favors, in secret or in public.
Veil from us your hands in secret or openly.
إنif خاننيhas betrayed me الزمنtime المعروفthe familiar فيin سببٍa means of support
وخاننيand betrayed me زمنٌan infirmity فيin الحلّsettling والقطنand dwelling
If familiar Time has betrayed me in some means of support,
If the known time has betrayed me in a matter
And infirmity betrayed me in settling and dwelling,
And time has betrayed me in ease and cotton,
فقدthen indeed شفانيhas healed me دواthe medicine of نعماكَyour bounty منشدةreciting
هذاthis بذاكfor that ولاand no عتبٌreproach علىagainst الزمنtime
Then the medicine of your bounty has healed me, reciting:
Your favors' song has healed me of this by that,
“This for that, and no reproach against Time.”
No blame on time.
