My verse of praise, then the house of the one I praise—

O house of ʿĀtika, of which I sing in love!

This, that, and this other—I try to shun each,

for fear of enemies, though my heart is devoted to it.

And he who shuns me turns away from me, yet I—

I swear—incline toward him despite his rebuff.

May the Deaf Month bring him joy; I have known him

listening attentively and beaming at praises.

Reluctantly is an ear lent today to a complaint about

a lot in which sorrows speak and act.

    مفتاح بابهمُ لمثليَ أمثل

    And a man turns me away from my masters’ door;

a key to their door would better suit one like me.

By your father, O son of ʿAlī, my longing indeed

comes from beneath my love-stricken heart and from above.
