My two friends from Egypt, halt; let us weep in al-Sabk

over our life on the Nile, aboard the heavens' boat.

For Egypt—oh, my yearning for Egypt!—a yearning

through which my longing heart proves sound in the assay.

And oh, my rapture there, drawn toward black eyes,

for whose like I weep through every dark night.

and purged the faith of love for you of rival worship.

through whittling; and they bear glory towering in height.

to them: they do not complain, but redress complaints.

their judgments honed in what to take and what to leave.

showing you Arab figures joined to Turkish gravity.

they shield against the impact of arrows that wound.

And with their shade—though it is a reed pen's shade—

they pass across the world as screens against dishonor.

I string for them the pearls of description from their own compositions,

and my words have only the fineness of the thread.
