تكادshe almost بألحاظwith the glances of المحِّبينthe lovers تشربis drunk in
تكاد بألحاظ المحِّبين تشرب
My soul be ransom for a sweet beauty, slender of form,
With a gentle cloak my soul is clad
Almost drunk in by lovers’ glances.

على أنَّ قلبي في هواها معذَّب
Her words and qualities are indeed sweet,
Though her words and ways torment me
Yet my heart is tormented in loving her.
My heart with passion for her is racked

فمن أجل هذا اصبح العود يضرب
The lute of pleasure dared to resemble her voice,
The lute dared mimic her voice's tone

فقال الأسى دَعها تخوض وتلعب
And with her playing she made lovers’ tears flow,
With lovers' tears she plays at pleasure
So sorrow said, “Let her wade and play.”
Though Sorrow cries "Let be! Do not toy!"
