سكنتُ وابني بدارِ قومٍ
أوقاتناour times تارَةًat one time وتارَهand at another
أوقاتنا تارَةً وتارَه
My son and I lived in some people's house;
I dwelt with my sons in the home of a people
Our days—now one way, now another.
Whose time was at times fire, at others ember.
فإنهاfor it is بالخصامthrough quarrelling نارٌa fire
فإنها بالخصام نارٌ
وقودهاits fuel الناسُpeople والحجارةand stones
وقودها الناسُ والحجارة
For quarrelling makes it a fire,
For strife is a furnace; its fuel men and stones.
Whose fuel is people and stones.
