My lord, though the time of our allegiance is sweet

O my lord, if our allegiance pleased you,

in words, yet in its meaning lies harshness from you.

By word though it be, yet you've tyrannized its meaning,

أنا في المديح أشبب الوصف الذي

أنا في المديح أشبب الوصف الذي

أهدى وأنتَ على الجريح تذفف

أهدى وأنتَ على الجريح تذفف

In praise, I enliven the description that

In praise I liken that description which

I offer, while you finish off the wounded.

I bestow, while you tend the wounded with disdain.
