My gray hair has left no pleasure in my life.

And gray hair is a dawn that cuts off pleasures.

I parted from the most blessed of wives, and lost, from

Hama's abode, my customary benefits and gifts.

May rain salute the days of that one and this,

And water the haunts of my wife and my mother-in-law.

And indeed the chief judge, their crown, has erased

From me the sorrow of losing beauty and benefactions.

His gifts overflowed upon me, though I did not ask,

And his copious rainclouds watered my plants.

    إنّ المطوّق ساجعُ النغمات

    And I cooed in praise when bounty collared me;

Indeed, the ring-dove coos its melodies.

And even if, through weakness, I profess little praise,

Then may my prayers for his welfare surely abound.
