سقىmay it water الغيثthe rain قبراًa grave حلهdwelt in it النجمthe star والندىand generosity
سقى الغيث قبراً حله النجم والندى
وفضلand excellence النهىintellect والعلمand learning والفضلand virtue والنثرand prose
وفضل النهى والعلم والفضل والنثر
May the rain water a grave where the star and generosity dwelt,
And excellence of intellect, learning, virtue, and prose.
كأنَّas though بنيthe sons of العلياءeminence يومon the day of وفاتهhis death
كأنَّ بني العلياء يوم وفاته
نجومُstars سماءٍa sky خرَّfell منfrom بينهاamong them البدرthe full moon
نجومُ سماءٍ خرَّ من بينها البدر
As though the sons of eminence, on the day of his death,
Were stars in a sky, from among which the full moon fell.
