حمى اللهُ من ريب الحوادثِ سادةً
لشوقيfor my longing بهمfor them حالٌa state or plight وللصبرِand for patience ترحالdeparture
لشوقي بهم حالٌ وللصبرِ ترحال
May God shield the lords from calamity’s treacherous turns.
May God protect noble ones from ill fate's harm
My longing for them has its plight, while patience takes its leave.
For yearning after them I feel, and patience must roam
كحّلتI lined with kohl جفونيmy eyelids بالسهادِwith sleeplessness لبعدهمbecause of their distance
كحّلت جفوني بالسهادِ لبعدهم
فياso, oh! حبَّذاhow lovely! للسّهدfor sleeplessness والبعدand distance أميالkohl-sticks; miles
فيا حبَّذا للسّهد والبعد أميال
I lined my eyelids with sleeplessness because they were far away.
My eyelids they lined with kohl from their absence
So, how lovely are sleeplessness’s kohl-sticks and distance’s miles!
So blessed be distance, though miles it may loom
