حمى اللهُ شمسَ المكرماتِ من الأذى
ولاand may ... never نظرتْbehold عينايَmy two eyes يومَthe day مغيبهhis setting
ولا نظرتْ عينايَ يومَ مغيبه
May God protect the sun of noble deeds from harm,
and may my eyes never behold the day of his setting.
لقدindeed أبقتِhave preserved الأيَّامُthe days منهof him لأهلِهاfor their people
لقد أبقتِ الأيَّامُ منه لأهلِها
بقيةَa remnant صافيthe pure part of المزْنِthe rainclouds غيرnot مشوبِهtheir tainted portion
بقيةَ صافي المزْنِ غير مشوبِه
The days have indeed preserved of him for their people
a remnant of the clouds' pure rain, not their tainted portion.
كأنَّas though سجاياهُhis qualities اللطيفةَgentle قهوةٌwine
كأنَّ سجاياهُ اللطيفةَ قهوةٌ
حبابُthe froth حميّاهاits heady strength بياضُthe whiteness مشيبِهhis gray hair
حبابُ حميّاها بياضُ مشيبِه
His gentle qualities are like wine,
whose heady froth is the whiteness of his gray hair.
