فقدت وعش تفدى بالبرايا

فقدت وعش تفدى بالبرايا

Imam of the Muslims, take solace for the one

you have lost; live on, with all creation as your ransom.

ودم لمدائح وصفا أجور

ودم لمدائح وصفا أجور

لك المرباع منها والصفايا

لك المرباع منها والصفايا

And live on for praises and unalloyed rewards;

yours are their quarter-share and choicest spoils.

فقيدتكَ التي صغرت كبير

فقيدتكَ التي صغرت كبير

قضاء عزائها بينَ القضايا

قضاء عزائها بينَ القضايا

Your departed girl, who was small—great is

the task of consoling you for her among all concerns.

فيا لك طفلةٌ من بيتِ علم

فيا لك طفلةٌ من بيتِ علم

عليها قد تطفَّلت المنايا

عليها قد تطفَّلت المنايا

Ah, what a child from a house of learning,

upon whom the fates of death have intruded!

ويا لك زهرة من دوحِ قومٍ

ويا لك زهرة من دوحِ قومٍ

سرت بجدودها مسرى البجايا

سرت بجدودها مسرى البجايا

And what a blossom from a people's mighty trees,

who journeyed with her forebears as the Beja camels journey.

يقد وضعَ الأسى دمعاً عليها

يقد وضعَ الأسى دمعاً عليها

وقد طلعت شجون من ثنايا

وقد طلعت شجون من ثنايا

Indeed [reading uncertain], grief has laid tears upon her,

and sorrows have risen from the recesses.

ولم أعرف لها اسماً ولكن

ولم أعرف لها اسماً ولكن

أقول الآن فاطمة الرزايا

أقول الآن فاطمة الرزايا

And I did not know her name, and yet

I now call her Fāṭima, the weaner of calamities.
