If lamenting sorrow, O ʿAzz, could avail him,

the outpouring of tears’ tongue would suffice him.

So, what tears from an eye! Every morning raincloud

draws water only from their channels.

As though the bounty of ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn had become for him

a tale: he recounts it, and it quenches his thirst.

Master of eloquence and bounty—if he said, “The seas have overflowed,”

his gifts would say the same, without a simile.

O you with whom I trade a verse for a house to dwell in,

I shelter in it as I please—and compose it as verse.

How fair the house your bounty lets me dwell in,

in return for every verse of praise that speaks of it!

Those like me and you know the worth of that and this,

and the master of the house knows best what lies within.
