لئن عذرَ الصاحبُ المرتجى

لئن عذرَ الصاحبُ المرتجى

لتأخيرِ معلوميَ الواجب

لتأخيرِ معلوميَ الواجب

If indeed the hoped-for patron is excused

If the hoped-for friend excuses

for delaying my rightful stipend,

The lateness of my obligated news,

فقد رمَّ حاليَ تاج العُلى

فقد رمَّ حاليَ تاج العُلى

ونابَ الصديقُ عن الصاحب

ونابَ الصديقُ عن الصاحب

then Tāj al-ʿUlā has indeed mended my fortunes,

Then he has cast my state from its high crown

and the friend has stood in for the patron.

And the friend has taken the place of the companion.
