وطارحتُ معتلَّ النسيم بدائي
I mingled my weeping with remembrance of al-‘Aqiq,
I mixed my tears with memories of 'Uqayq,
And exchanged confidences about my malady with the ailing breeze.
And cast my complaints to the gentle breeze,
وإنand if حدَّثَreported العذالُthe reproachers عنيabout me بسلوةٍof solace
وإن حدَّثَ العذالُ عني بسلوةٍ
فإنيthen I وعذَّاليand my reproachers منamong الضعفاءthe weak
فإني وعذَّالي من الضعفاء
And if the reproachers report that I have found solace,
And if the reproacher speaks of me with tranquility,
Then I and my reproachers are among the weak.
Then I and my reproacher are both weak,

And my only cure is the earth of Ahmad’s grave,
And my only medicine is Ahmad's soil,
In Tayba, exalted above every heaven.
In Taybah, exalted above all heavens,

The angels circle his night-journey’s path in humble reverence,
Where angels circle his shrine humbly,
Evening after morning, or morning after evening.
In the evenings and mornings,

Is there, then, a way for me up to Tayba’s dwellings,
So will I have access to the verses of Taybah,
Through which I may escape the bondage of my misery?
With which I find deliverance from the fetters of my misery,

I fashion panegyrics upon the peerless pearl,
And fashion from the orphaned pearls my eulogies,
Through them I am counted among the goldsmith-poets,
With which I surpass the compositions of the poets,

In Zuhayr’s house of verse, where Ka‘b is blessed,
With Zuhayr’s abode where Ka'b and others dwelled,
And the Hassan of my praise is steadfast, as is my hope.
My praise, my hope, and my aspirations fulfilled.
