عجبت لأنكادِ الزمان وإن طمتْ

عجبت لأنكادِ الزمان وإن طمتْ

ولا عجبٌ في فكرة تتولج

ولا عجبٌ في فكرة تتولج

I marvel at Time’s afflictions, however high they surge;

I marveled at time’s misfortunes, though they surged;

yet there is no wonder in a thought that penetrates deeply.

Yet there is no cause for wonder in probing reflection.

أجاوِر من أهوى ولا وصلَ بيننا

أجاوِر من أهوى ولا وصلَ بيننا

كأني ومن أهواهُ ثغرٌ مفلج

كأني ومن أهواهُ ثغرٌ مفلج

I live beside the one I love, yet no union joins us—

I dwell beside the one I love, yet there is no union between us,

as though my beloved and I were two of my front teeth, with a gap between them.

As though I and my beloved were a mouth with gaps between its teeth.
