عوذتI invoked protection for شعركyour hair بالظلامby darkness وماand what وسقit gathered
وسناكand your radiance بالقمرby the moon المنيرshining إذاwhen اتَّسقit grew full
I invoked protection for your hair by darkness and what it gathers,
I sought refuge for your poetry in the darkness, yet your teeth shone like the bright moon when arranged
and for your radiance by the shining moon when it grows full.
Alas! What a glorious sight amidst the meadows
آهاًah! لهاfor it منwhat a طلعةface فيwithin طرةa forelock
لاحتit shone فلاso may not لاحَshine الصباحthe morning ولاnor الغسقthe dusk
Ah for a face framed by a forelock,
That appeared but did not appear like the dawn or the dusk
that shone—may neither morning nor dusk ever shine!
A crescent whose ascent was auspicious but a star in its encampment was set ablaze

لكنَّbut نجمthe star of حشايَmy breast فيهin him قدhas احترقburned up
And a crescent grown full, rising in good fortune,
I found the love in it false when I found magic in its eyelashes true
yet the star within my breast has burned up in him.
The critic claimed I corresponded with him, I wish the critic had spoken truth about our correspondence
رشأٌa gazelle-fawn وجدتI found العذلreproach فيهconcerning him باطلاًunfounded
لماwhen وجدتI found بمقلتيهin his two eyes السحرmagic حقtrue
A gazelle-fawn: I found reproach for loving him unfounded,
By my father whose red tears I shed
when in his eyes I found magic real.
In love for him, so if he sought help he outdid
زعمclaimed المشنعthe slanderer أننيthat I واصلتهenjoyed union with him
ليتif only المشنعthe slanderer عنabout تواصلناour union صدقspoke truthfully
The slanderer claimed that I had found union with him;
Oh what concurrence between passions and tears
would that the slanderer had spoken truly of our union!
One is shackled while the other broke free

My father be his ransom—I set the crimson stream of my tears running
Arise o lad and bring it to me in love
in love of him; whenever it sought a finish, it raced ahead.
Yellow and radiant like the glow of sunset
ياoh! للجوانحfor the ribs والبكاءand weeping تطابقاًin accord

Oh, the accord between my ribs and weeping:
Dictates abundance while the pen writes on paper
these are bound, while that has broken free.
And stalks bow down for greetings
قمْrise! ياO غلامboy وهاتهاand bring it فيfor حبهlove of him

صفراءgolden مشرقةًradiant كماas وضحshone الشفقthe twilight
Rise, boy, and bring it for love of him,
As flowers raise their visitors over meadows
golden and radiant as the twilight shines.
Maybe a time of correspondence will renew for me

These doves, upon the pulpits of their groves,
That had a covertly stolen enjoyment in pleasures
dictate song, while dew writes on the leaves.

And the boughs lower their heads in greeting,
That time and those words are fabricated
and the flowers lift their visitors upon their pupils.
News may conflict but dew

قدindeed كانَwas فيamong اللّذَّاتpleasures معنىan essence مسترقsecretly stolen
So may it renew for me a time of union,
Brings news of the triumphant king concurring
that had been a secretly stolen essence among pleasures.
A king of treasure troves whose promises and threats
لاdo not تسمعنَّever listen بأنَّto the claim that قلبيmy heart قدhas سلاforgotten
ذاكَthat الزمانtime وذاكَand that قولa claim مختلقfabricated
Never heed the claim that my heart has forgotten
Complain to his hands of separation and distinction
that time; that is a fabricated claim.
The sea is in his palms and in his chest

Reports differ, but generosity
So take and if you intend it then fear drowning
is a report about King al-Mu'ayyad on which all agree.
The one who would sacrifice himself for the people

تشكوcomplain of بأيديهat his hands التفرقdispersal والفرقand terror
A king whose stores of wealth and whose enemies
And seek refuge from the injustice of calamities at daybreak
complain, at his hands, of dispersal and terror.
The sword has a stream in his right hand

فانهلso drink deeply وإنand if ناويتهyou oppose him فاخشthen fear الغرقdrowning
The sea is in his palms, or in his breast;
So it overflows on its banks bloody red
so drink your fill; if you oppose him, fear drowning.
With his palm holding a pen that has no complaints

ويعاذand is protected فيamid ظلمthe darkness of الحوادثcalamities بالفلقby daybreak
He is the one for whom people serve as ransom,
The matters are settled by his merit, no patching up
and who is guarded, in calamities' darkness, by daybreak.
The seas flow so if he flung his wars

فلذاand therefore يفيضoverflows علىover جوانبهits sides العَلقclotted blood
The sword has a channel in his right hand,
That sea would not cleave in rage and rupture
so clotted blood overflows along its sides.
In it are hopes for sciences and dew

فتقthe rending of الأمورaffairs لفضلهthanks to its excellence لاnor رتقmending
And in his palm is the pen, under which none complain
If it overflowed smoothly and if words flowed gently
of affairs' rending, thanks to its excellence, nor their mending.
Like a branch made more beautiful by the prime of its flowers

لاwould (with the following verb) نشقsplit ذاكthat البحرsea غيظاًin rage وانفلقand cleave apart
The seas flow; were he to assail one with his warfare,
And generous with ripe fruit and first pickings
that sea would split in rage and cleave apart.
A man succeeded who cast the hand of his hopes
فيهin him مآربthings sought للعلومby learning وللندىand by generosity
إنif فاضhe overflows راقhe delights وإنand if أفاضhe pours forth القولspeech رقhe is gentle
In him learning and generosity find what they seek;
To the station of Ishmael one day and clung
if he overflows, he delights; if he pours forth speech, he is gentle.
The sought and the horizon obscured alive

Like a bough whose blossoms' radiance is savored,
And the seeker and fate intimidated wrathful
he gives ripe fruit generously, and his fragrance is inhaled.
By God how much loftiness of his glory bowed down

Fortunate the man who cast the right hand of his hope
A head that had indomitable pride beyond endurance
toward Isma'il's station one day and held fast.
His sovereignty marched and elongated its journey

والملتجاand the refuge والدهرwhile Time مرهوبfeared for الحنقwrath
The hope when the horizon is denied rain,
Becoming continuous on necks and reaching the neck
and the refuge when Time's fury is feared.
He wanted to make his objectives run

By God, how many bowed before his lofty glory—
Towards life and so sweat silenced him
heads that once had might none could withstand!
Victory, the fertile world, and guidance

فغدتso it became علىover الأعناقnecks واصلةcontinuing العنقa swift gait
His sovereignty advanced, its course stretching ever farther,
Whether reconciling, generosity, or speaking
and so it pressed on over necks at a swift gait.

And there sought to race toward his goals
From his palms the sweetest embraced
the pouring rain; so sweat bridled it.
The scents of goodwill do not escape

إنwhen صالhe attacks أوor بذلhe bestows الصنائعfavors أوor نطقhe speaks

Victory, a fertile world, and guidance,
My state so smell the perfume from my fingers
when he attacks, bestows favors, or speaks.
O king, victorious one a prayer

I met him; he healed my hope, and I embraced
That leaves enemies burning in rage
with both palms his bounty's sweetest gift.
I achieved my purpose sincerely and cut off what

And the scents of kindness cannot be hidden under
Was between me and the people of time of burdens
any circumstance; smell the perfume from my fingertips.
So I will thank the good grace you bestowed on me

O King al-Mu'ayyad—a call
The thanks of meadows with abundant blossoms
that leaves foes, enraged by it, lamenting their burning.
With praises you qualified me for their composition

You coupled my quest with lavish gifts, and severed whatever
And my neck became emancipated and stolen
ties bound me to the sons of Time.
Gems I served you with though

So I shall surely thank you for the kindness you bestowed on me,
You inclined towards higher gems with proportion
as flowering gardens thank abundant water,

thus they are freed, while my neck is enslaved.

Pearls with which I served your eminence; they were merely
joined to glory's pearls in a coordinated sequence.
