أرجو اللقاء الصاحبيّ كما

أفلت في دمشقَ وهوَ غائِب

أفلت في دمشقَ وهوَ غائِب

I hope for a meeting with al-Sahib, just as

I hope for a meeting with my friend

it eluded me in Damascus while he was absent;

As I wander in Damascus while he is absent

حتَّى لقدْ صحَّ مقالُ قائلٍ

حتَّى لقدْ صحَّ مقالُ قائلٍ

دمشقُ لا يوجدَ فيها صاحب

دمشقُ لا يوجدَ فيها صاحب

so that, indeed, a speaker's saying proved true:

Until the saying of one who said became true

“In Damascus no companion is to be found.”

In Damascus there is no friend
