عندِي غلام بعلم الحرف مشتغلٌ

عندِي غلام بعلم الحرف مشتغلٌ

وأيّ حرف إلى الفحشاء منحرف

وأيّ حرف إلى الفحشاء منحرف

I have a lad engrossed in the science of letters;

I have a youth well-versed in letters, keeping busy,

And what a letter he is, bent toward indecency!

Yet whichever craft to lewdness strays from the path.

أحكى الأنام لدالٍ في تفاجعه

أحكى الأنام لدالٍ في تفاجعه

وأنفقَ الناسَ من ميمٍ على ألف

وأنفقَ الناسَ من ميمٍ على ألف

Of all mankind, he most resembles a dāl in his lamentation;

He regales people with a ‘Dal’ in his fright,

And is the most lavish of men, spending from a mīm upon an alif.

And spends folk with a ‘Meem’ due to an ‘Alif.’
