    I answered love's caller before he called.

    So, if you two wish, reproach me; and if you wish, leave me be.

    and my sore eyelid has made tears its watering place.

    it returned studded with pearls from my two tear ducts.

    A reproacher frightens me with sickness; would that the one

    who tormented me had left any room in me for sickness!

    ولو أنَّ فكري عارض السمع ما وعى

    I have wasted away: were an eye to seek me, it would not see me;

    and were my thought to encounter the ear, it would not perceive it.

    And many a time I had a master,

    a beloved—parting from him wrought what it wrought.

    for all our long companionship, had never spent a night together.

    his cheeks' radiance would be the sun's rising-place.

    أدارَ عليّ البابليّ المشعشعا

    He passed me a cup of tears—and how often

    he had passed me Babylonian wine mixed with water.

    A king who made poetry a marketplace again in his day;

    so I came to his gates as a buyer.

    And, by God, were it not for the urge to praise him,

    the house of verse would be a barren waste to me.

    Do you blame the pens of praise if they become

    prostrate and bowing before him, not before humankind?

    The merits of those of old have indeed been heard of,

    but excellence like this has never reached an ear.

    وبأسٌ كما تنضى الصواعق لمعا

    A cloud, laden as one hopes the clouds will be,

    and valor flashing like thunderbolts unsheathed;

    فكانت على الأيامِ برداً موشعا

    and knowledge, whose pages we filled with its many branches,

    so they became a patterned mantle draped across the days;

    and his renown inspires love in every heart,

    excusing the Shi‘i partisan devoted to Ibn ‘Ali.

    and how sweet a spring for watering noble deeds!

    and how welcome each year is, for the sake of meeting him!

    His bounty has collared me as doves are collared,

    so it is no wonder that I circle and coo.

    God has decreed only this: that, for a petitioner, he fulfill

    a duty; if he finds no duty, he gives voluntarily.

    I swear, praise has been wasted on anyone else—

    utterly wasted; with him, however, it spreads its fragrance.
