How often, for love of his gaze, I have known

How much for my love at his glance

a turn of fate amid scattered tears!

I have shed tears in abundance

وكم لها من شجون

وكم لها من شجون

أمام قلبي وخلفه

أمام قلبي وخلفه

And how many sorrows it holds,

And how much grief she has

before my heart and behind it.

Before and behind my heart

وكم بجودِ عليٌّ

وكم بجودِ عليٌّ

أغنى رجا الوفد كفّه

أغنى رجا الوفد كفّه

And how often has Ali, through generosity,

And how generous was Ali

enriched the delegation’s hopes with his palm!

Enriching the pilgrim's palm with bounty

وفاض لي منه بحرٌ

وفاض لي منه بحرٌ

في جنبه البحر غرفه

في جنبه البحر غرفه

And from him an ocean overflowed for me;

And an ocean poured forth from him

beside it, the sea is but a scoopful.

By the sea he drew up a handful

وشلّ كفّ افتقار

وشلّ كفّ افتقار

عن راحتيَّ وكفه

عن راحتيَّ وكفه

And he crippled the hand of want,

And he freed the hand of poverty

keeping it from my two palms and restraining it.

From my comfort and grasp

للمالِ سرًّا وجهراً

للمالِ سرًّا وجهراً

لصاحبِ السرّ عطفه

لصاحبِ السرّ عطفه

Wealth, in secret and openly,

For wealth secretly and openly

has affection for the keeper of secrets.

To the keeper of secrets his kindness

يا قادماً لي ومثلي

يا قادماً لي ومثلي

بفضلِ رؤياه طرفه

بفضلِ رؤياه طرفه

O you who come to me—one like me

O you who came to me and my like

becomes a marvel through the grace of beholding him.

With the grace of his glance

ليهنك العام تلقى

ليهنك العام تلقى

ألف السعادة ألفه

ألف السعادة ألفه

May the year bring you joy; may you find

May this year bring you happiness

its thousand to be a thousand joys.

A thousandfold in its thousands

أكرم بقصد حجًّا

أكرم بقصد حجًّا

وحول بابك وقفة

وحول بابك وقفة

How noble a pilgrimage is a journey to you,

Make pilgrimage with intent

and a vigil around your door!

And circle around your door in supplication
