Had my verses not voiced an elegy for you,
If my poems don’t lament you, whose laments will they be?
My flowing tears would have mourned you with pearls on my behalf.
My flowing tears mourn you with flowing pearls.
ياO ساكنَdweller in الخلدeternity أورثتyou bequeathed الورىmankind حرَقاًburning anguish
فأنتَso you فيin جنَّةٍParadise والقومand the people فيin نارfire
O dweller in eternity, you have bequeathed burning anguish to mankind;
O dweller of eternity, you left the world burning.
So you are in Paradise, while the people are in fire.
You’re in Paradise while people are in Hell.

You have become your Lord's neighbor in the gardens, drawn near;
You dwelled near your Lord in the Gardens, drawn close.
You have indeed been recompensed for a neighbor and a home.
You were compensated for a neighbor and an abode.

Sleep peacefully: sleeplessness is inescapable
Sleep well with no anguish from something denied us,
For us over you, and no heart can bear it patiently.
No grieving heart from us, and no withholding of patience.

I shall never forget your constant kindness to petitioners,
I won’t forget people visiting you, gathering,
In days when no petitioner could find supporters.
Days when no visitors luckily had supporters.

I won’t forget people getting your gifts gathering,
When the stranger railed against his days.
Where a stranger visited in his days of misery.

I shall never forget your presence in the lofty gathering, as
I won’t forget you among the honorable assembly,
Dhukāʾ, the sun, outshines meteors and moons.
An intellectual shining amid meteors and moons.

I shall never forget your right hand bestowing bounty, concealing
I won’t forget your right hand hiding virtue
That bounty until it seemed as though bounty were a disgrace.
As if virtue itself were shameful and ugly.

I shall never forget your pens, with which you hastened,
I won’t forget your pens which hastily took to
Truly longing to obey the Creator.
Yearning for truth, obedience to the Creator.

Alas for you—for the distressed and the stranger,
My ardent longing for an ardent longing exile
Whose longing for kin and home your nearness soothed.
Whose proximity consoled him from his people and home!

Alas for you—for your ornamented words,
My ardent longing for well-turned phrases
Which the clan sings, or the night traveler chants to his camels.
With which the living sing or the wakeful chant!

A prayer niche wept at your loss, as though the radiance
A prayer niche wept over losing you as if
Of its lamp, within its bosom, were a fire of remembrance.
Its lantern in its enclosure held logs blazing.

And a copy of the Qur'an whose heart spent the night lamenting in grief,
A Qur’an complained from its heart with sadness,
Split among sections and ten-verse portions.
Divided into parts and tenths.

A school where pearls were once systematically lined –
Upon the bosoms of ears and eyes.
Ears and sights upon benches listening.

A story in which expected help was at your hands,
At your hands, and ease after hardship.
And ease after hardship.

And a gathering where, through generosity and piety, you were
An academy whose purity and devotion
More worthy of being called Ibn Dīnār.
Gave you more right to be named Son of the Faith.

May you never be far away—for how many noble deeds you left,
Don’t go far! How much concealed goodness you left,
Like rain that passed, leaving bountiful traces.
Like rain that passes and leaves grace in its traces!

If you have departed, your kindness is very near;
If you journeyed, pure, drawn near,
And if you rest, your memory travels far and wide.
If you settled, a mention, circulating far!

How heedless people are of this, and how oblivious
People don’t neglect this and aren’t heedless of
To a watering place that has never sent anyone back!
A source unlike any they ever knew gushing forth!

A grave is raised, and allotted lifespans are firmly fixed;
A grave built up and precise lifetimes.
Alas, how little power there is in reason and stones!
Yet how brief years are in rock and pebbles!

And a claimant from our creditor, death, lies in wait for us,
And a seeker who ambushes us from Death’s hiding place
While we fret over scarcity and abundance.
While we’re busy with reducing and increasing.

While the youth reveled in safety, suddenly there appeared
The youth feels safe when there appear
Crescent moons bearing death, armed with claws.
Crescent moons with claws to harvest souls.

As though each crescent, at its rising,
Where are they who achieved what they achieved and settled down
Were a bow demanding souls for blood-debts.
Captive amid calamities and downpours?

Where are those who attained what they attained, then lay
Where is the eminent one whose outstanding deeds
As hostages among graves and rags?
Were repeated among angels with pins?
أينَwhere العلاءal-ʿAlāʾ الذيwho كانتْwere مآثرهُhis noble deeds

Where is the one whose compassion I sheltered in
The angels would ask to hear recounted in their nightly talk?
Shades of bliss and fruits?

Where is he through whose kindness I used to seek refuge
I awoke to find the traces of his grace gone.
In shades of bounty and fruit?
My tears flow amid gardens and rivers.

I now graze upon the traces of his bounty,
O son of the Prophet, if any bitterness appears,
And my tears are amid gardens and rivers.
Comfort comes – such is the way of this house.
ياO ابنson of النبيّthe Prophet عزاءًtake solace إنif بداappeared كدرٌdistress
فإنهاfor indeed it is عادةٌa habit منof هذهthis الدَّارabode
O son of the Prophet, take solace if distress appears,
To water and clay, man’s origin goes back.
For such is the custom of this abode.
Why then would we dislike his elegy in sorrows?
للماءto water والطِّينand clay أصلُthe origin of المرءa person منتسبٌis traced
فكيفso how ننكرwe find strange أنthat يرثىhe is mourned بأكدارwith sorrows
A person's origin is traced to water and clay;
I say this as if I’m resigned to it
So how can we find it strange that he is mourned with sorrows?
While God knows what my feelings conceal!
أقولI say هذاthis كأنيas though I عنهwithout him مصطبرٌpatiently enduring
واللهand God يعلمknows ماwhat فيin طيّthe folds of إضماريmy hidden thoughts
I say this as though I could patiently bear his absence;
But God knows what lies in the folds of my hidden thoughts.
