حاشاfar be it لوعدكfrom your promise أنthat يلويهbend it نسيانforgetfulness
حاشا لوعدك أن يلويه نسيان
وحسنand the beauty وجهكof your face أنthat يعدوهpass it by إحسانkindness
وحسن وجهك أن يعدوه إحسان
Far be it that forgetfulness should bend your promise,
Never shall your promise be twisted by forgetfulness,
Or that kindness should pass your face's beauty by.
Nor shall kindness of your face be swept away by favor.
ياO منyou who وقفتremained fixed عليهon him العينthe eye ساهرةwakeful
يا من وقفت عليه العين ساهرة
أقسمتI swore لاnot صدّturn away عينيmy eye عنكfrom you إنسانa person
أقسمت لا صدّ عيني عنك إنسان
O you on whom my sleepless eye is fixed,
O you, upon whom my wakeful eye stood fixed,
I have sworn: no person shall turn my eye away from you.
I swore no human shall turn my eyes away from you.

فيك التغزُّل والمدح المنظم في
محمدٍMuhammad فلشعرِيso for my poetry فيamong الورىhumankind شانstanding
محمدٍ فلشعرِي في الورى شان
Love verse is about you, and praise composed in verse is about
In you is my romance and well-ordered praise of
Muhammad; thus my poetry has standing among humankind.
Muhammad - so my poetry is of consequence in the world.
كافيequal to المناصبthe offices فيin سرٍّprivate ومشتهرٍand what is public
كافي المناصب في سرٍّ ومشتهرٍ
فحبَّذاso how excellent منهfrom him إسرارsecrecy وإعلانand openness
فحبَّذا منه إسرار وإعلان
Equal to the demands of office, in private and in public,
Your noble ranks suffice both in secret and openly,
How fine, then, his secrecy and openness!
So blessing upon your secrets and your declarations.
تهنّrejoice بالعيدin the feast ياO عيدfeast العفاةthe supplicants ولاand never
تهنّ بالعيد يا عيد العفاة ولا
زالتcease بسؤددكby your eminence الأمداحthe praises تزدانbe adorned
زالت بسؤددك الأمداح تزدان
Rejoice in the feast, O feast of supplicants, and never
Rejoice in the Feast, O Feast of the Virtuous, still
May praises cease to be adorned by your eminence.
Adorned by praises that circle around you.
عمرتI built بيتa house ولاءٍloyalty فيكَtoward you أوor مدَحٍpraise
عمرت بيت ولاءٍ فيكَ أو مدَحٍ
حتَّىuntil كأنِّيas though I were سلمانٌSalman وحسَّانand Hassan
حتَّى كأنِّي سلمانٌ وحسَّان
I have built a house of loyalty to you, or of praise,
I inhabited a house of loyalty or praise in you,
Until it is as though I were Salman and Hassan.
As if I were Salman or Hassan.
يجلّis exalted ديوانa poetry collection مدحٍpraise أنتyou صاحبهits subject
يجلّ ديوان مدحٍ أنت صاحبه
