Bring your most delectable cup to me—to me!

And do not begrudge me its gold.

An aged wine, passed round among the drinking companions,

As though a necklace lay upon its breast,

Of wine that erased the darkness.

It shone, its intoxicating heat rising,

So I said, “The juice of the Pleiades’ cluster!”

Pass it round amid melodies and piping,

Over two kinds of pearls—blossoms and raindrops.

As though its tale in every land

Were the tale of al-Muʾayyad’s bounty in my hands,

Sweet in the telling and wafting fragrance.

To King al-Muʾayyad my praise journeyed,

And waded through all the generous to reach his sanctuary,

As a seeker of dawn wades through the stars.

Oh, what bounty, folding up all the lands,

And bringing Ḥātim and Ṭayyiʾ back to life for me!

I swore in truth by your radiant countenance:

You have indeed surpassed mankind in eminence and precedence.

So be gentle, O youth of lofty glory—be gentle!

    فليتك لو لطفت بهنَّ شيَّا

    You have thoroughly roasted your rivals’ ribs;

If only you would be a little gentle with them!

And a beauty for whom the heart goes mad—

The place grows fragrant whenever she breathes.

    فألقيتُ الحيا عن منكبيَّا

    I was alone with her, and time had granted leave;

So I cast modesty from my shoulders,

And caught the watcher off guard and said, “Come!”
