And a waterwheel, once a branch, now
A fountain once erect like a rod
coos like a dove, longing for the branches.
Now to the rod aspires, a dove in woe.

I complained to it of love’s anguish, and its state
I told my love, my pain, my distressed heart
is like mine: weeping, or an echoing cry of longing.
She wept like me, sighing in her sorrow.

And one must voice a complaint to someone of noble character,
I must complain to one of chivalry
who comforts you, consoles you, or shares your pain.
Who'll comfort, cheer me, feel my agony.
