وآنسة قد فرَّق الدهر بيننا
فللهso, to God قلبيmy heart ماhow أحنّyearning وماand how أحنىbowed
فلله قلبي ما أحنّ وما أحنى
And a maiden—time has parted us.
The days have separated me from my beloved
So, to God belongs my heart—how yearning, how bowed!
By God, how sad my heart has become

وقلبيَ منها قاب قوسين أو أدنى
In longing, my heart turned toward her eyebrows.
My heart yearns for her eyebrows
And my heart is two bow-lengths from her, or nearer.
As if drawn back tightly to shoot one or two arrows

بتسع شهورٍ قد خلت كلّها حزنا
And prolonged separation and hardship deepened my bewilderment
Prolonged distance and hardship have confused me
through nine months that have passed, all in sorrow.
Nine months have passed, all filled with sorrow

Have I, then, a petition to the ʿAlāʾī gate
Can I find words to tell the story
that grants my words, or my hope's two hands, weight
That empower my speech or make my hopes come true?

of verse? Were it not for the presence of Maʿn, whom I saw
Without meaning, I would not compose verses
there, I would have found neither word nor meaning.
For I would find neither words nor meaning

And I recognized what another had said in complaint:
I heard another lover complaining
And one like me sings, and one like you enriches.

And I possess a craft—so employ me for my craft,
If you need my craft, employ me for it
for my livelihood; otherwise, provide for me along with the infirm.
Else, sustain me as time passes on
