Ah, who will aid one robbed of his heart, its captive,
O you whose heart is captive and hostage,
tormented by one whose love is veiled, who grudges it?
Whose affection is veiled and whose love is grieving,

تعلق أعلى هدبه بجبينه
A man of sorrow, watching the stars, as though
A brother of longing, guarding the stars as if
his upper lashes were fastened to his brow.
His brow was suspended from their heights,

ولكن فرط الوجد عقد يقينه
His fortitude was in doubt when a reprover reproached him;
Enduring blame when a blamer condemns him,
yet excessive longing is the knot that binds his certainty.
But excessive passion has tied his certainty,

And in his heart lies a buried sickness of sorrow;
In his heart a latent, buried pain of sorrow -
so no wonder he weeps for what lies buried in him.
No wonder he weeps for his buried love!

and in India, a likeness to the cutting keenness of his eyelids,
And in India, a meaning from the water of his eyes,

وأحسن بمكتوم الغرام مصونه
one of those who ardently seek to conceal their passion—
Al-Talibi concealed love in his youth,
and how fair is passion, concealed and guarded!
And he who hides love protects its honor,

I concealed my passion in loving him, playing the philosopher;
I concealed passion in my love like a philosopher -
so my love came to affirm its own hidden existence.
So my love spoke revealing its secrecy,

And I beheld upon his cheeks the traced line of his down;
I saw the lines of her cheek and swore
so, on the pages of beauty, I swore by its letter nūn.
By the beauty of her dimples and graces,

حمًى يتبع الغادين رجع حنينه
My heart yearns for me; by God, who has ever seen
My heart yearns and by God whoever saw
a sanctuary whose plaintive echo follows those departing?
A loved one following the departing with longing,

ويطربه في الليل صوت أنينه
Such is love: in it, one's tears become sweet,
It is love in which a man's tears are sweet to him
and the sound of one's groaning brings delight at night.
And the sound of moaning delights him at night,

Against my will, my eye lost its precious one;
Despite my will an absent beloved
so weeping's water compensated it with its lowly flow.
Replaced my eyes with the water of tears,

حديث جوى قلبي عن ابن معينه
My eye narrated from the spring of tears; listen, then,
My eyes were sated from the spring of tears - so listen
to my heart's tale of burning grief, from its spring's son, Ibn Maʿīn.
To the conversation of my heart about her son,

I am steadfast in the practice of love,
confident in loyalty's rightly guided one, its trusted guardian.

To aid me in passion comes the help of Him who
I am supported in my passion by one whose help
made Ibn Ayyūb a pillar of His faith.
Established the pillars of his faith like Ibn Ayyoub,

مليكٌ تولَّى الفضل بعد ضياعه

وهذَّب هذا الدهر بعد خبونه
A king who took charge of excellence after its loss,
A sovereign who assumed virtue after its loss
and set this age aright after its crookedness.
And refined this age after its vileness,

And he extended a right hand: the sea and rain may be excused
Who extended a hand that makes excuses for the sea and life
if, on the day of bounty, they swear by his right hand.
If they swear an oath on the day of dew,

أخو صدقاتٍ تقدر المدح قدره

فما يشتري في المدح غير ثمينه
A giver whose charitable gifts appraise praise at its worth,
The brother of charity who values praise as it should be
so he buys nothing of praise but its precious kind.
For he does not buy praise except with gems,

If people bring praise to his gate,
When people bring praise to his door
they have brought it only to its buyer's gate.
They bring it only to the door of nobility,

That is not a craving for praise, but rather
That is not from stinginess with praise - rather
the nature of an overflowing cloud, pouring down its rain.
It is the nature of a pouring cloud to be tranquil,

Enamored of glory, learning, valor, and bounty—
Ardent in the heights, knowledge, valor and dew
by God, how sweet the tale of his longings!
So excellent is the discourse of his passions!

He has an abode towards which purposes incline
as woodland doves swoop toward their nests.
Like the inclination of a dove flock to their nest,

A flood of bounty surged in his precinct,
The flood of dew flows from his side
so the delegation's mounts became like ships upon it.
So the pilgrims' steeds are like his ship,

When someone in hardship seeks King al-Muʾayyad,
When a pauper seeks the victorious king
he sees the cheer upon his face as his guarantor.
He sees good news in his face like a guarantee,

I marvel at a smile, the face's guarantor, when there comes
I am amazed that when the face's guarantor comes
a seeker of bounty to claim his debts from it.
The dew's creditor demands his debts from him!

How magnificent that the age trembles at his command
no mountain's flank is firmer than his calm repose.
While the towering mountains stand still,

Matchless in tribulations and equal to them,

His is the resolve of one whose striving for glory is not hard
A resolute man whom exertion in the heights

You are a lion walking in its den,

And the twang of his bow entertains him in battle,
Distracting him in the fray with the twang of your bow
when a string delights a man with its ringing.
When a vibrating string distracts a man with its resonance,

many a keen sword routs foes with its ringing.
And how many swords are defeated by their clashing!

and whom the thick of battle frees from need of his fortresses!

Through you the afflicted time turned from harm
and freed the children of hope from its prisons.
And released the children of purpose from prison,

Gentle and kind after refusal and harshness,

so he brought you, from woven verse, its nūn—its fish.
So he came to you with the stringing of pearls in his poem.
