Turn aside to the bān trees, and seek among their groves
Journey to the deserts and recite among its sands
a heart, for I have lost mine amid their dwellings.
A heart that got lost from me among its melodies

And ask the shade of the ghaḍā trees about it; there it has
And ask the shadows of the lush meadow about it, so settle
a resting place, driven to shelter by estrangement's scorching heat.
A dwelling for it, for the agony of separation afflicts it

Or, if not, ask the dwelling of whispered confidences in Kāẓima
Or else ask the abode of whisper in Kadhimah
about my soul; I guarantee that it is there.
About my passion and my yearning, for it is in it

And convey greetings to the little Arab band at the valley bend, all of them,
And convey the greetings of sincere sorrow to all of them
and bow before them, gently delivering your salutation.
And submit to them and be gentle in serving them

And salute the moons of that encampment on behalf of a lovesick man
And awaken the moons of that living place from slumber
whom the night kills with thought even as it revives him.
That the night kills with thoughts while he brings it to life

to free the captive hearts held by their people.
To unshackle the captive hearts among its people

God bless an encampment whose moons, when they set,
To Allah belongs life when its moons set
are replaced for you by the faces of its fair women.
Faces of beauties compensate you for them from its melodies

A dwelling: when my gaze roams its playgrounds,
A delight, when my gaze roams in its meadows
I take them for necklaces upon its collarbones.
I imagine them as necklaces in their rise

The beauty of the soft-cheeked gazelle unites them
and holds the heart of everyone enslaved by a face.
And the heart of the captive-faced contains them

The treasures of the gazelles walk from its chokers
guarded by serpents from among its tall spears.
Guarded by snakes from its hillocks

If not for consideration and the clarity of separation
the unadorned gazelles would be indistinguishable in beauty around it.
The herds’ beauty would be confused in its surroundings

When the deer run in the course of the valley
the horses stir up dust from its uplands.
The horses stir up dust from its summit

Since its bow prohibited touching the ground to
one seeking purification, my tears are its valley's water.
The violator of my honor, and my tears are the water of its valley

It quenched the thirst of the mighty, its sharp swords
spare it dependence on rain's bounty in a year of drought.
Suffice them from the favor of rain in the year of drought

Perhaps the breeze of the morning spreading your ashes
one day visit your ailing lover and heal him.
Will cure your sickness one day and heal it

through love of you, my existence indeed lies in its dissolution.
Loving you for my existence in my annihilation

I empty my pockets when you are absent, so how when

You are present, from where do I get a heart to empty?

Oh Allah, O dwellers of Sala', with a burning passion
which his tear ducts poured out upon the ruined dwellings.
Its afflictions have wasted it and whitened its blackness

A captive whom fair women's waists make wasted,
It grazes the beauties with eyes, whenever they turn
and fair women with languid, dark eyelids whittle away.
Towards the red, they become like berries flowing in the cheek

that they are your front teeth, thus making him lovesick.
So your eyes target it with arrows of killing

Do you not see its radiance upon his forelocks?
Still turning towards the settlements with pearls

toward the full moons through its radiant nights!
It would be the finest jewelry in its thread

How noble those little nights! Had they been strung together,
A sun whose face adorned the times and dispelled
they would have outshone the pearls upon the strand.
From its people darknesses from its plateaus

Radiant, as though glorious ʿAlī had bestowed them,
An ally of wisdom, for him in every darkness
so they were adorned with full moons of his favors.
A light of opinion leading to victory guides it

A sword that if not sheathed by patience, it would have
from its people the darkness of its evils.
Destroyed the people when determination unsheathes it

An ally of resolve, he has, in every dark adversity,
A rain whose ambition and highness gathered
a light of judgment guiding him toward victory.
So people shared its generosity and its heights were specified

A sword: had forbearance not sheathed it, it would almost
Success and hopes in his right hand
destroy mankind when determination draws it.
And the red catastrophes in his intentions

Rain that poured and rose high in glory; all creation shared
So if the crow of separation probed it with its sword
his generosity, while his lofty honors remained his alone.
Its affection would recover and its darknesses whiten

The blessing of eminence and bright hopes lie in his hand—
If the shooting stars came to him one dewy day
the right—and crimson deaths lie in his wishes.
He would not accept the sun as a gold coin and give it

The crescent desires to serve him
both its temples would have grayed and its hidden wing-feathers whitened.
Even if its flames had to ignite for him one day

And the pride of rain in him, if it befriended him
he would not deem the sun a sufficient dinar to give them.

even if one day his hearths were kindled with them.
And his generosity to the needy brings him down

And the rain's delight in him, if he would become its brother!
And hearing when piety invokes him

With hopes as full as his hands

Of the sublime kings, were it not for their beauty
cease to water with showers of righteousness.

would leave glory shaken and its firm mountains flattened.

The Ḥaydarī, to whom time submitted,
The full moon of swords, if laughter exposed it in awe
until it grew meek and its calamities feared him.
It would with the flowing blood make it cry

A champion who, when a pool of pearls engulfs him,
And the mind knows even if the stars transgressed,
wades into death, his valor all but setting him aflame.
The humiliation of prostration will afflict them when its plains pray
بدْرُthe full moon الحُسامِof the sword إذاwhen فيamid الرّوعِterror أضحكَهُhe makes it laugh
فإنّهthen he بالدّمwith blood الجاريflowing سيُبكيهِwill make it weep
When he makes the full moon of his sword laugh amid terror,
He managed affairs so he directed in his commands
he will then make it weep with flowing blood.
The ruling of purposes and ends in its prohibitions
والهامُand heads تدريknow وإنْeven if عزّتthey are proud سيلزَمُهاwill befall them
ذلُّthe abasement السُّجودِof prostration إذاwhen صلّتْpray مَواضيهِhis keen blades
And heads know, however proud they be, that they must bear
He loved glory as a child and aspired to it
the abasement of prostration when his sharp blades pray.
So what makes him suffer became trivial to him
ساسَhe governed الأمورَaffairs فأجْرىand made prevail فيin أوامرِهhis commands
حُكمَthe rule المُنىof wishes والمَناياand deaths فيin مناهِيهِhis prohibitions
He governed affairs, giving his commands
Ask the snakes when they attack from his fingers
the rule of wishes, and his prohibitions the rule of deaths.
Are they more delicate than the soft fingers or its valleys?
تعشّقَhe fell in love with المجدَglory طِفلاًas a child واِستَهامَand became enthralled بهِby it
فهانَso became easy فيهِfor it عليهfor him ماwhat يُقاسِيْهِhe suffers
He fell in love with glory as a child and became enthralled by it,
He has traits that if threaded at dawn would
so that what he suffers for it became easy for him.
Not match the pleiades constellation in its successor
سلِask الحَياthe rain حينَwhen يَهْميit pours عنabout أناملِهhis fingertips
أهُنّare they أندىmore bountiful بَناناًin fingers أمor غَوادِيهِits morning showers
Ask the rain, when it pours, about his fingertips:
Features that if the night contained and yearned
are those fingers more lavish, or are its morning showers?
With its love it would ransom them in its robes
لهُhe has خِصالٌvirtues بخيطِon the thread الفَجرِof dawn لوif نُظِمَتْthey were strung
لمnot ينتظِمْwould be strung سبَجُthe jet beads الدّاجيof dark night بثانِيهِon its second thread
He has virtues that, if strung upon dawn's thread,
The necklace of glory and supremacy are his works
would admit no jet beads of dark night on its second thread.
And the jewel of religion and life are his efforts
شمائِلٌvirtues لوif حَواهاpossessed them الليلُthe night واِفتقدَتْand they were lost
بودِّهout of its love لَفداهاit would ransom them فيin دَرارِيهِits brilliant stars
Virtues that, had the night possessed them and then lost them,
A master, it is as if you recite verses of prostration to us
it would lovingly have ransomed with its brilliant stars.
When you name him our prayers are upon him
قِلادةُthe necklace المجدِof glory والعُلياand eminence صنائِعُهhis benefactions
وزينةُand the adornment الدّينِof religion والدُّنياand the world مَساعِيهِhis endeavors
His benefactions are the necklace of glory and eminence,
O aid of generosity, nay the essence of its seal
and his endeavors the adornment of religion and the world.
O engraving of its ring, O circlet of its guide
مَولىًa lord كأنّكas though you تَتلوrecite فيin مجالِسِناour gatherings
آيَverses السُّجودِof prostration علَيناto us إذwhen تُسمّيهِyou name him
A lord: it is as though, in our gatherings, you recite
You remain my succor and place of return
verses of prostration to us whenever you name him.
And I do not cease to gift my praise to you
ياO ساعِدَarm الجودِof generosity بلrather ياO نَفْسَthe soul حاتِمهof its Ḥātim
ياO نقْشَthe engraving خاتَمِهof its signet ياO طوقَthe necklace هادِيهِof its neck
O arm of generosity—rather, O soul of its Ḥātim,
If not for your patience, my poetry would not please
O engraving of its signet, O necklace of its neck!
Nor would its rhythms please for its rhymes
لاmay you not زِلْتَcease to be ياO غَوثُsuccor ليfor me غَوثاًa refuge ومُنتجَعاًand a place of bounty
ولاand may I not برِحْتُcease إليكَto you المَدْحَpraise أُهدِيهِpresent it
May you remain, O succor, my refuge and my place of plenty,
And witness from the miraculous verses of my poem which
and may I never cease presenting praise to you.
Immortalizes memory in life and perpetuates it
لولاwere it not for تملُّكُكُمْyour possession of رِقّيmy servitude بأنعُمِكمthrough your favors
ماnot راقَbecame delightful شِعريmy poetry ولاnor رقّتْgrew delicate مَبانِيهِits structures
Had your favors not made you master of my servitude,
A praise that if eloquently spoken about you
my poetry would not delight, nor its fabric grow delicate.
Travels like the orbit of planets, its rhymes
واِستجْلِand behold منamong آيِthe verses نَظْميof my composition أيَّwhat a مُعجزةٍmiracle
تخلِّدُimmortalizes الذِكرَremembrance فيin الدُنياthe world وتُبقيهِand preserves it
And behold, among the verses of my composition, what a miracle
Structures of poetry built by thought from gold
makes remembrance immortal in this world and preserves it.
Inhabited by the houris of meaning from its semantics
مدحٌpraise تَسيرُtravel إذاwhen ماindeed فيكَabout you فُهْتُI uttered بهwith it
سيرَthe motion الكَواكِبِof the stars فيin الدّنياthe world قَوافيهِits rhymes
Praise—whenever I voice it of you, its rhymes travel
And gain with a fast, may God conclude it with good
through the world with the motion of the stars.
For you, and reward you with contentment
بُيوتُhouses شِعْرٍof poetry بَناهاbuilt them الفِكرُthought منfrom ذهَبٍgold

سكّانُهاtheir inhabitants حُورُhouris عِينٍwide-eyed منfrom مَعانيهِits meanings
Houses of verse that thought has built of gold,
A crescent of bliss appeared from you supreme
inhabited by wide-eyed houris drawn from its meanings.
So it poured watching you, longing nearly hides it
واِغْنَمْand gain profit بصومٍthrough fasting عسىmay بالخيرِwith goodness يختُمُهHe end it
لكَfor you الإلهGod وبالرُّضوانِand with divine pleasure يجزيهِreward it
Reap the gain of fasting; may it be sealed with goodness
And may the holiday rejoice in repeating its return to you
for you by God, and may He reward it with His good pleasure.
Nay, in you O delight of life we congratulate it
هِلالُa crescent سَعدٍof good fortune تَراءىappeared فيهin it منكfrom you عُلاًloftiness

A fortunate crescent in which your loftiness appeared
became lovesick, its longing almost hiding it.
وليَهْنِكَand may it gladden you العيدُthe festival فيin تجديدِthe renewal عودتِهof its return
بلrather فيكَon you ياO بهجةَjoy الدُّنياof the world نُهنّيهِwe congratulate it
May the festival gladden you on its renewed return;
rather, O joy of the world, we congratulate it on you.
