كشفْتُI lifted حجابَthe veil of السّجْفِthe curtain عنfrom بيضةِthe fair maiden of الخِدْرِthe inner chamber
فزحْزَحْتُso I drew aside جنحَthe wing of الليلِthe night عنfrom طلعةِthe face of البَدْرِthe full moon
I lifted the curtain's veil from the fair maiden of the inner chamber.
I unveiled the veil of darkness from the moon's orb,
Thus I drew night's wing aside from the face of the full moon.
And pushed away the wings of night from the sunrise.
وهتَكْتُand I tore away عنfrom سِينِthe letter sīn of الثّناياthe front teeth لِثامَهاher veil
فأبصَرْتُso I saw عينَthe spring of الخَضْرِal-Khidr فيin ظُلمةِthe darkness of الشَّعْرِthe hair
And I tore her veil from the sīn-shaped row of her front teeth,
I tore away the cover from the cheek's beauty,
And saw al-Khidr's spring amid the darkness of her hair.
And saw the green of eyes in the darkness of hair.
وجاذَبْتُهاand I tugged at her سودَthe black الذّوائِبِtresses فاِنثَنىso bent
عليَّtoward me قضيبُa bough of البانِmoringa فيin الحُلَلِthe robes الخُضْرِgreen
I tugged at her black tresses, and there bent
I drew near the blackness of the tresses and it coiled around me,
Toward me a moringa bough in robes of green.
The staff of separation upon my throat in green anklets.
وقبّلْتُand I kissed منهاof her وجنةًa cheek دونَbetween وَرْدِهاits roses
وتقبيلِهاand kissing it شوكُthorns of المثقّفةِthe straightened spears السُّمرِbrown
I kissed a cheek of hers; between its roses
And I kissed a cheek without its rose,
And the kiss stood the thorns of straightened brown spears.
And its kiss is the thorns of the one with kohl-lined eyes.
I made my way to her فيin الليلِthe night كالصّقْرِlike a falcon كاسِراًswooping
وقدwhile already خفَقَتْfluttered فيin الجنْحِthe darkness أجنحةُthe wings of النّسْرِthe eagle
I made my way to her at night like a swooping falcon,
I came to her in the night like a breaking falcon,
While the eagle's wings fluttered in the darkness.
Its wings fluttering in fright.
وخُضْتُand I plunged through إليهاtoward her الحَتْفَdeath حتّىuntil كأنّنيas though I
أُفتِّشُI search أحشاءَthe entrails of المنيّةِdeath عنfor سِرّيmy secret
I plunged through death to reach her, until it seemed
And I rushed my destruction to her, as if
I was searching death's entrails for my secret.
I searched the entrails of death for my secret.
وشافَهْتُand I faced أحراساًguards إلىtoward ضوءِthe light of وجهِهاher face
يرَوْنَthey see سَوادَthe dark shape of الطّيفِthe phantom إذwhen نحوَهاtoward her يَسْريit travels by night
And I faced guards on my way toward the light of her face,
And I stayed awake, while the heart of night concealed us,
Who see a phantom's dark shape as it steals toward her.
And its darkness made mischief about us to the spies.
فنبّهْتُso I awakened منهاin her نرجِساًa narcissus زرّهُbuttoned it shut الكَرىsleep
كأنّيas though I أفُضّbreak open الخَتمthe seal عنfrom قدَحَيْtwo cups of خَمْرِwine
Then I awakened her narcissus, which sleep had buttoned shut,
When dawn in the darkness jealously raged,
As though I were breaking the seal on two cups of wine.
Its light made mirages race toward us.
وبِتْناand we spent the night وقلْبand the heart of الليلِthe night يكتُمُناconceals us معاًtogether
وغُرّتُهاand her radiant brow عندَamong الوُشاةِthe tale-bearers بناagainst us تُغريincites
We spent the night together, while night's heart concealed us,
If her hair had not returned the night to blackness,
Yet her radiant brow incited the tale-bearers against us.
The living would know our secret.
إذاwhen الصُّبْحُdawn فيin الظَّلْماءِthe darkness غارَsank away غديرa pool

فمنthen from ضوئِهاher light لجُّthe deep sea of السّرابِthe mirage بناaround us يَسريflows
When dawn sinks like a pool into the darkness,
And she spent the night adorning her ears with pearls from me,
A sea of mirage from her light flows around us.
Scattered on her threaded necklace.
فلوso if لمnot تردُّbrought back الليلَthe night صَبغةُthe hue of فرعِهاher tresses

Had the hue of her tresses not brought night back
We both had a share of her - one motionless,
Over her, the tribe would have known our secret.
Blooming on her throat, the other racing on mine.
وباتَتْand she spent the night تحلّيadorning السّمعَthe hearing منّاof us بلُؤلؤٍwith pearls

She spent the night adorning our hearing with pearls,
Blessed is He who taught the gazelle speech,
Whose loose gems put her strung necklace to shame.
And Glory to He who gave life to the doll of the palace.
كِلاناeach of us لهfor him منّاof us نصيبٌa share فجامدٌso some are solid
علىon نحرِهاher throat يزهوshines وجارٍand some flow علىon نحريmy throat
Each of us has a share of them: some are solid,
Through her is a new moon whose shining
Shining on her throat, and some flow upon mine.
Exults in the death of darkness, like the moon's crescent.
تبارَكblessed is مَنْHe who قدindeed علّمtaught الظّبيَthe gazelle منطِقاًspeech
وسُبحانَand glory to مُجريthe One who makes flow الروحِthe spirit فيinto دُميةِthe statue of القَصْرِthe palace
Blessed is He who taught the gazelle speech,
And a beauty spot from perfume on her cheek
And glory to Him who sent the spirit flowing into the palace's statue.
Is like a seed the hand of remembrance ignited.
بروحيَwith my soul منهاof her طلعةٌa face كلّماwhenever اِنْجلَتْit shone forth
تشمّتَgloated فيat موتِthe death of الدُجىdarkness هاتِفُthe calling bird القُمْريthe turtledove
With my soul I would ransom her face; whenever it shines forth,
My mind emptied for her until she settled in it,
The calling turtledove gloats over the death of darkness.
And passions would not settle anywhere but the palace.
ونُقطةُand a dot of خالٍa beauty mark منof عبيرٍperfume بخدّهاon her cheek
كحبّةِlike the kernel of قلبٍa heart أجّجَتْهُkindled it يدُthe hand of الذِكْرِremembrance
And the perfumed dot of a beauty mark upon her cheek
It is as if my mouth from the zikr of her and fragrance
Is like a heart's kernel kindled by remembrance's hand.
Is the buzzing home of bees or the perfumery.
خلَتْwas emptied منof سِواهاanyone but her مُهجتيmy heart فتوطّنَتْso she settled
بهاin it والمَهىand the oryxes لمdid not ترْضَaccept داراًa dwelling سوىexcept القصْرِthe palace
My heart emptied itself of all but her, and she settled
My soul and all my body are enraptured by her,
Within it—for the oryx would accept no dwelling but a palace.
If her cheek depicts her in my heart, my thoughts paint her.
كأنّas though فميmy mouth منfrom ذكرِmentioning فيهاher mouth وطيبِهِand its sweetness
قرارَةُthe hollow of بيتِthe home of النّحلِbees أوor دارةُa circle of العِطرِperfume
As though my mouth, from mentioning her mouth and its sweetness,
I wanted eternal youth through her hair's rhythm,
Were the hollow of a beehive, or a circle of perfume.
So I spun poetry in the long meter of verse.
أروحُI go about وجسميand my body كلُّهall of it طَرْفُa sprig of عندَمٍcrimson dye-wood
إذاwhen خدُّهاher cheek فيin القلبthe heart صوّرَهُdepicted it فِكريmy thought
I go about, my whole body a sprig of crimson dye-wood,
And I composed spells as her eyelids taught me
Whenever my thoughts picture her cheek in my heart.
The rhyme scheme that enchants, on broken meter.
أردتُI wished بهاabout her التّشبيبَamatory verse فيin وزْنِthe measure of شَعْرِهاher hair
فغزّلْتُso I wrote love verse فيin البحرthe meter الطويلِLong (Tawil) منof الشِّعرِpoetry
I wished to sing her beauty in the measure of her hair,
I match her cheeks with gentle words,
So I composed love verse in the Tawil, the Long meter.
And match her waist meaningfully with subtlety.
وصُغْتُand I fashioned الرُقىcharms إذwhen علّمَتْنيtaught me جُفونُهاher eyelids
بناءَthe construction of القَوافيrhymes السّاحراتِbewitching علىupon الكَسْرِthe kasra vowel
I fashioned charms, since her eyelids had taught me
But for her forehead, passion would not have let me
To build bewitching rhymes upon the kasra vowel.
Wander in my love for her, with clear excuses.
أُجانِسُI match باللّفظِwith wording الرّقيقِdelicate خُدودَهاher cheeks
وألحَظُand I glance بالمعنىwith meaning الدّقيقsubtle إلىtoward الخَصرِthe waist
With delicate wording I match her cheeks,
And if not for the red gems between her lips,
And with subtle meaning I glance toward her waist.
My tears would not have flowed from their red corals.
أمَاindeed والهَوىby love العُذريّchaste (Udhri) لولاwere it not for جَبينُهاher brow
لماwould not رُحْتُI went about فيin حُبّيmy love لهاfor her واضحَclear in العُذْرِexcuse
Indeed, by chaste Udhri love—were it not for her brow,
I am passionate about her, distracting my thoughts,
I would not go about with so clear an excuse for loving her.
And I made my passion obedient, so it rose in rank.
ولولاand were it not for اللآليthe pearls البيضُwhite بينbetween شِفاهِهاher lips
لماwould not جادَflowed generously دَمعيmy tears منfrom يَواقِيتِهtheir rubies الحُمْرِred
And were it not for the white pearls between her lips,
The essence of noble sons, purified,
My tears would not have poured forth their red rubies.
The lineage of purified fathers, virtuous.
شُغِفْتُI was enthralled بهاby her حُبّاًwith love فرقّتْso softened رَقائِقيmy tender verses
وملّكْتُand I granted ownership of رقّيmy servitude حيدراًHaydar فسَماso rose قَدْريmy standing
Love for her enthralled me, and my tender verses softened;
Ally of dew, power, forbearance and restraint,
I gave Haydar mastery over my servitude, and my standing rose.
Brother of justice, benevolence, pardon and righteousness.
خُلاصةُthe choicest of أبناءِthe sons of الكِرامِthe noble مطهراًpurified
سُلالةُa scion of آباءٍforefathers مطهّرةٍpurified غُرِّillustrious
The choicest of the sons of noble men, purified,
The beauty of the full moon's forehead, and the light that
A scion of purified, illustrious forefathers;
With its rising made the cheeks of time glow.
حليفُan ally of النّدىgenerosity والبأسِand valor والحلمِand forbearance والنّهىand wisdom
أخوa brother to العدلِjustice والإحسانِand beneficence والعَفْوand forgiveness والبِرِّand righteousness
An ally of generosity, valor, forbearance, and wisdom,
A young man who came while the days frowned,
A brother to justice, beneficence, forgiveness, and righteousness.
So he dawned like a Narcissus in the cheek's garden.
جمالُthe beauty of جَبينِthe brow of البدرِthe full moon والنيرُand the luminary الّذيwhose
بطَلعتِهby his appearance قدindeed أشرقَتْshone غُرّةthe brow of الدّهرِtime
The beauty of the full moon's brow, and the luminary whose
And the honored ladies' cheeks became cheerful
Appearance has made the brow of time shine forth.
At his birth, with the chest feeling relief.
فتىًa youth جاءwho came والأيّامُwhile the days سودٌwere black وجوهُهاtheir faces
فأصبحَso he became كالتّوريدِlike a rosy flush فيon وَجنةِthe cheek of العصرِthe age
A youth who came when the days' faces were black,
After withering, the dew through him flourished,
And became a rosy flush upon the cheek of the age.
So the bird of thankfulness sang in his branches.
وأضحَتْand became وجوهُthe faces of المَكرُماتِnoble deeds قريرةًgladdened
بمولدِهat his birth والصّدرُand the chief منشرحgladdened الصّدرِat heart
The faces of noble deeds grew glad
And perfections returned after their scattering,
At his birth, and the chief was gladdened at heart.
So he beautifully rearranged them in prose and poetry.
وأينعَand flourished منfrom بعدِafter الذّبولِwithering بهthrough him النّدىgenerosity
فغرّدso sang فيin أفنانِهits branches طائِرُthe bird of الشّكرِgratitude
Generosity flourished through him after its withering,
Gentler than a fragrant breeze, in character,
And the bird of gratitude sang among its branches.
And more refined in nature than the breeze of passion.
ووافىand he came to المَعاليlofty honors بعدafter تشتيتthe scattering of شملِهاtheir company
فأحسَنَso he perfected منهاof them النّظْمَthe stringing بالنّائِلِwith gifts النَثْريscattered
He came to lofty honors after their company had scattered,
If the angels adorned themselves with his pride,
And finely strung them together with his scattered gifts.
Then in him and his fathers is the adornment of pride.
أرقُّmore tender منthan الرّاحِwine الشَّمولِheady شَمائِلاًin disposition
وألطَفُand gentler خُلقاًin character منthan نَسيمthe breeze of الهوىlove العُذريchaste
More tender in disposition than heady wine,
His truthful words are like verses of a chapter,
And gentler in character than the breeze of chaste love.
But to the hearing they are in the form of magic.
إذاif زيّنadorns الأملاكَkings حِليةُan ornament of مفخرٍglory
ففيهِthen in him وفيand in آبائِهhis forefathers زينةُthe adornment of الفخرِglory
If kings are adorned by an ornament of glory,
I name him by his grandfather's name as a metaphor,
In him and his forefathers glory finds its ornament.
Just as the generous man is named by the sea.
تكلّمُهُhis speech فيin الصّدقِtruthfulness آياتُverses of سورةٍa surah
ولكنّهbut it فيto السّمعِthe ear فيin صورةِthe form of السِّحرِmagic
His speech, in its truth, is a surah's verses,
When you see his light come from his father,
Yet to the ear it takes the form of magic.
You will believe him to be from that brilliant star.
تُسمّيهcalls him باِسمِby the name of الجدِّthe grandfather عِنديto me كنايةٌan allusive epithet
كماas يتسمّىis called صاحبُthe possessor of الجودِgenerosity بالبحرِby the name sea
To me, an allusive epithet names him by his grandfather's name,
He rises and descends with mercy and steadfastness,
As a generous man is called the sea.
Flowing as tears flow from the rock.
إذاif بأبيهِwith his father قستَyou compare مِصباحَthe lamp of نورِهhis light
تيقّنتَهyou know it certainly منfrom ذلكthat الكوكبِstar الدُرّيpearl-bright
If you compare the lamp of his light with his father,
He climbed to the heights, while shooting stars seek his status,
You know it comes from that pearl-bright star.
So he surpassed them in the field of generosity.
يرِقُّhe grows tender ويصبوand yearns رحمةًin mercy وصَلابةًand firmness
فيجريso he flows كماas تجريflow العيونُsprings منfrom الصّخرِrock
He grows tender and yearns, merciful yet firm,
If his pool of generosity were like his right hand,
And flows as springs flow from rock.
Only the finest pearls would rain from it.

فعبّرso he passed عندat السّبْقِoutstripping عنbeyond جهةِthe region of الغَفْرِal-Ghafr
He rose to the heights while the stars pursued his reach,
And if the hellish tree were watered by his kindness,
And, outstripping them, passed beyond the region of al-Ghafr.
It would bear only roses and flowers.
فلوso if كانwere حوضُthe basin of المُزْنِrain clouds مثلlike يمينِهhis right hand

If the rain clouds' basin were like his right hand,
He shakes the Indian swords, which are rivers,
They would rain down nothing but exquisite pearls.
So its waves hurl flames.
ولوand if مَنبِتُthe growing-ground of الزّقّومِzaqqum يُسْقىwere watered بجودِهwith his bounty

If the ground where zaqqum grows were watered by his bounty,
And he carries the Qin branches, which are withered,
It would grow nothing but roses and blossoms.
So its palms bear the fruits of triumph.
يهزُّhe brandishes سُيوفَthe swords of الهِندِIndia وهْيَwhile they جَداولٌare streams

He brandishes Indian swords, and they are streams,
And he uncovers his brocade, removing its cover,
Casting flames of glowing coals amid their waves.
To dress the night in the brocade of pride.

He bears the boughs of spears, though they are withered,
He strips the horizon's neck of its starry jewels,
And in his palms they bear the fruit of victory.
Enriching it beyond them with his creation.
ويسفِرُand he draws aside عنfrom ديباجَتَيْهِhis two brocade-like cheeks لِثامَهُhis veil

He draws his veil away from his two brocade-like cheeks,
A cloud, when it comes and the gardens of wishes
And clothes the flank of night in the brocade of glory.
Turn white with yellow leaves.
ويسلُبُand he strips نحرَthe throat of الأفْقthe horizon حِليةَof the ornament of شُهبِهits stars

He strips the horizon's throat of its ornament of stars,
Its lightning is the white of swords in battle,
And the radiance of his character makes it need them no longer.
And its pouring in its buckets is pure gold.

A cloud: on any day he comes, there glow
In the moment of judgement, his insight
The gardens of white hopes with yellow leaves.
Distinguishes the sincere from the intoxicated.

His lightning flashes are white blades of steel in battle,
And a determination that melts even mountains,
And in peace his downpour is pure gold.
When it flows, like clouds fleeing in fear.

And justice without fire or sword, that almost
That distinguishes the choicest wine from drunkenness.
Straightens all crookedness and docking.

So they flow as clouds flow, out of terror.
They would squeeze out the honey of patience from their mouths.

The venom would be changed into Egyptian sugar.

They would spit it from their mouths as liquid aloe.
The flowing springs burst forth in his palms.

When the mention of the noble passes, his mention
Their venom would be replaced with Egyptian sugar.
Is like the Fatiha, in the beginning of remembrance.
يُعيدُhe revives رُفاتَthe crumbled bones of المُعتفينsupplicants كأنّماas though

He revives the crumbled bones of supplicants, as though
O son of Ali, this is the call of a loyal one,
Al-Khidr's spring had burst forth in his palms.
To your state, secretly and openly.
إذاwhen مرَّpasses ذكرُthe mention of الفاخرينَthe boastful فذِكْرُهthen his mention

كفاتحةِlike the Opening of القرآنِthe Quran فيat أوّلthe beginning of الذِّكْرِrecitation
When those who boast are mentioned, his mention
Indeed, time has increased its joy in you,
Is like the Quran's Opening at the beginning of recitation.
And the splendor of glory excelled in your face.
فياso O اِبْنَson of عليٍّAli وهيَand this is دعوةُa prayer of مُخلصٍone sincerely devoted
لدولتِكُمto your rule بالسّرِّin secret منهfrom him وبالجَهْرِand openly
O son of Ali—and this is the prayer of one devoted
Through you, time became mighty, as if
To your rule, offered by him in secret and aloud—
All your nights were the Night of Power.
لقدindeed زادَتِincreased الأيّامُthe days فيكَthrough you مسرّةًin joy
وفاقَand excelled علىupon وجهِthe face of العُلاeminence رونقُthe radiance of البِشْرِgladness
Indeed, the days have grown more joyful through you,
In your right hand lies destiny and wishes,
And on the face of eminence, gladness shines supreme.
And good fortune for those who seek safety from poverty.
وعزّتْand grew glorious بكَthrough you الأيّامُthe days حتّىuntil كأنّماas though
لياليكَyour nights فيهاamong them كلُّهاall of them ليلةُthe Night of القَدْرِDecree
Through you the days have grown glorious, until it seems
So nobility never ceased to be joyful in you,
All your nights within them are the Night of Decree.
And glory never stopped smiling through you.
ففيfor in يدِكَyour hand اليُمنىright المنيّةُdeath والمُنىand wishes
ويُمْنٌand good fortune لمنfor whoever يَبغيseeks الأمانَsecurity منَfrom الفَقْرِpoverty
For in your right hand lie death and wishes,
And good fortune for whoever seeks safety from poverty.
فلاso may not برِحَتْcease فيكَin you العُلاeminence ذاتpossessing بهجةٍdelight

ولاand may not زالَcease فيكَin you المجدُglory مُبتسمَsmiling الثّغرِat the lips
So may eminence never cease to be joyful in you,
And may glory in you always wear a smile.
