And son of benefactors, when nights
O son of the benefactors, when the nights
afflict every man of consequence with humiliation!
Harmed everyone of any significance

بنَيلِby granting النُّجْحsuccess فيin الزمنthe age الضّنينِmiserly
Through you the world has grown fair and generous
Through you, the world became beautiful and gave away
in granting success in a miserly age.
By attaining success in the time of hardship
وفكّand undid الجودُgenerosity أغلالَthe fetters of العَطاياgifts
وأمسىand became البُخلُmiserliness فيin قَيدِthe fetter of الرّهينِthe captive
Generosity has undone the fetters of gifts,
And generosity unlocked the shackles of gifts
and miserliness now wears a captive's chains.
And stinginess became bound in chains

So hear, from my praise of you, an utterance
From the whispers of your praise I hear an utterance
that shakes the shoulders of rough, rugged ground.
That shakes the shoulders of the difficult sad one

I am the son of the revealer of verse, should you doubt,
I am the son of Jerall Al-Quraishi, do you doubt when I compose?
and the climber of praise's heights—do you recognize me?
And the young gazelle of poetry, do you recognize me?
خُذِtake الألواحَthe tablets منfrom زُبُرِthe writings of القوافيrhymes

Take the tablets from the writings of rhyme;
Take the tablets from the books of poetry
their text is an exposition of certainty.
For I translate them as the proof of certainty
بكَthrough you الرّحمنُthe All-Merciful علّمنيtaught me المَعانيmeanings

Through you the All-Merciful taught me meanings,
Through you, the Merciful taught me the meanings
and inspired them to my pen and my inkpot.
And inspired them to my pen and the letter noon

How many people in your presence see my station,
So how many people with you, I see my status
and wish for my fortune, while others envy me.
Who congratulate me, and people who envy me
ليَهنكَmay it gladden you سيّديmy lord عيدٌa feast شريفٌnoble
حكاكَit resembled you فجلَّand so rose above عنbeyond شِبهِthe likeness of القَرينِa peer
May a noble feast gladden you, my lord;
For you, my master, is a noble feast
it mirrors you, and so transcends the likeness of any peer.
Narrating you, so explain the match
فضحِّso sacrifice نُفوسَthe souls of أهلِpeople of الغَدرِtreachery فيهon it
وقرِّبْand offer up مهجةَthe lifeblood of الدّهرِtime الخَؤونِtreacherous
So sacrifice the souls of traitors on it,
Expose thereby the souls of the treacherous ones
and offer up the lifeblood of treacherous time.
And draw near the affection of the desolate ages

And may there ever stay pitched above you
And may canopies not cease to shade you
the canopy of exalted, firmly rooted honor.
The canopy of the lofty, established honor
