O waft of fragrance from the luxuriant garden,

and breeze from the spreading tree's shade,

this wafts at evening from the hills,

fragrantly, and that one from the pool of water.

Turn aside, you two, to the Judge of Judges one early morning,

in a brocade of flowers or ornaments of dew.

And carry to him on my behalf a trust:

a treasure of sincerity or a mantle of praise.

Then, when morning casts you both into his dwellings,

then range to and fro in the courtyard of high glory,

there where glory trailed the long hem of its waistcloth

    and walked gently with a swaggering gait;

and there traveled by night, dispelling every calamity's darkness,

the moon of eminence and the stars of counsel,

from a dwelling where the fire of hospitality had kindled

a blaze that turned the parting of darkness's hair gray.

Had I wished, I could have towered above the Pleiades there while seated,

and spread out the necklace of Orion's stars.

And I kissed the back of a noble hand, dewy with bounty,

as though I had kissed the face of the sky.

And between his brow and his right hand I filled

my eyes with radiance and rain,

moving gently between the broad valley-floor of a nature

grown mild, and the unassailable height of dignity,

enamored there of an auspicious brow

whose lines were fashioned from joy.

Had you seen me circling before it,

you would have beheld a sun and a chameleon.

In him, for God's sake, stood firm a mountain of tranquility

and justice, and the cord of hope stretched far.

The judgeship robed him in a mantle of eminence

whose fame left it no need of names.

Praise grew fragrant with rain's dew, as though it were

a basil sprig with dew-sprinkled shade.

He always has, in God's service, a cheerful face,

and, behind the veil of the unseen, an eye of keen discernment.

Between eloquence and beauty, charmed are

the ear that listens to him and the beholder's eye.

And he seems, in his resolve amid mercy,

composed of a glowing ember within water.

Between geniality and decisiveness, he seems

the blazing point of the dusky spear.

Had he wished to replace night with morning, he would have set about it

and erased the blackness of the pitch-dark night.

In him, the wind of noble virtues bends a tender bough,

where the tongues of poets warble.

And he seems—and his song's echo seems—

springtime and the ringing call of the lark.
