O suppleness of my flank and verdure of my precincts,

From the flutter of refinement and the water of youth!

Both grew clear and delicate, and in them met together

The smiling mouth of wine-foam and the faces of loved ones.

So I cooed there like a dove; and among my wishes

Was to borrow for her a raven's wing.

And I was doubly drunk, with wine and youth,

And trailed the twin trains of passion and youthful dalliance.

And now, by my steed, he is surely preeminent

In the racecourse of poets and writers,

Prancing proudly at the head of every page,

    With a poem and a letter's battalion.
