تَهادانيswayed me لِذِكرِكُمُat the remembrance of you اِرتِياحُjoy
فَبِتُّso I spent the night وَكُلُّand every جانِحَةٍrib جَناحُa wing
Joy swayed me at the remembrance of you,
So I spent the night with every rib a wing.
وَدَمعيand my tears جِريَةًin their flow مَطَرٌrain تَوالىfell in succession
وَجِسميand my body هِزَّةًin its trembling غُصنٌa branch يَراحُis stirred by wind
And my tears, in their flow, were ceaseless rain,
And my trembling body was a branch stirred by the breeze.
أَإِخوانيO my brothers وَلاand no إِخوانَbrothers صِدقٍof sincerity
أُصافيI befriend sincerely بَعدَكُمafter you إِلاexcept الصِفاحُsword blades
O my brothers, I have no true brothers
To befriend after you, save the blades of swords.
لِحُسنِfor the grace of الصَبرِpatience دونَكُمُwithout you حِرانٌbalking
وَلِلعَبَراتِand for tears بَعدَكُمُafter you جِماحُbolting
Noble patience balks without you,
And tears run wild after you.
فَدَيتُكُمُI would ransom you بِنَفسيwith my life مِنof كِرامٍnoble men
يَهُزُّsways بِهِمbecause of them مَعاطِفَهُits flanks السَماحُgenerosity
I would ransom you with my life, you noble men,
For whom Generosity sways its flanks.
أَرىI see بِهِمِin them النُجومَthe stars وَلاand no ظَلامٌdarkness
وَأَوضاحَand the brightness النَهارِof day وَلاand no صَباحُmorning
In them I see the stars, though there is no darkness,
And the brightness of day, though there is no morning.
تَخايَلُprance نَخوَةًin pride بِهِمِbearing them المُذاكيfull-grown steeds
وَتَعسِلُand quiver هِزَّةًwith a tremor لَهُمُfor them الرِماحُthe spears
Full-grown steeds prance proudly beneath them,
And spears sway and quiver for them.
لَهُمthey have هِمَمٌaspirations كَماjust as شَمَخَتrose high جِبالٌmountains
وَأَخلاقٌand dispositions كَماjust as دَمِثَتwere soft بِطاحُplains
They have aspirations as lofty as mountains,
And natures as gentle as the plains are soft.
وَجارِيَةٍand a ship رَكِبتُI rode بِهاaboard her ظَلاماًdarkness
يَطيرُflies مِنَof الرِياحِthe winds بِهاwith her جَناحُa wing
And aboard a ship I rode through darkness,
A wing of the winds bearing her in flight.
إِذاwhen الماءُthe water اِطمَأَنَّgrew calm فَرَقَّthen grew slender خَصراًat the waist
عَلاrose مِنfrom مَوجِهِits waves رِدفٌa rump رَداحُbroad and heavy
When the water settles and grows slender at the waist,
A broad, heavy rump rises from its waves.
وَقَدand already فَغَرَopened wide الحَمامُdeath هُناكَthere فاهُits mouth
وَأَتلَعَand stretched out جيدَهُits neck الأَجَلُthe end of life المُتاحُordained
And Death had opened its mouth wide there,
And the destined end had craned its neck.
فَماso not أَدريI know أَمَوجٌare these waves? أَمor قُلوبٌhearts
وَأَنفاسٌand breaths تُصَعِّدُrise upward أَمor رِياحُwinds
So I cannot tell: are these waves or hearts?
And are these rising breaths or winds?
