أَحُسُّI sip المُدامَةَthe wine وَالنَسيمُand the breeze عَليلُlanguid
وَالظِلُّand the shade خَفّاقُfluttering الرِواقِthe canopy ظَليلُdeeply shaded
I sip the wine while the breeze is languid,
And the shade is deep, its canopy fluttering.
وَالنورُand the blossom طَرفٌan eye قَدalready تَنَبَّهَhas awakened دامِعٌtearful
وَالماءُand the water مُبتَسِمٌsmiling يَروقُdelights صَقيلُpolished bright
And the blossom is an eye, awakened and tearful,
And the water smiles, delighting the eye, polished bright.
وَتَطَلَّعَتand rose into view مِنfrom بَرقِlightning كُلِّevery غَمامَةٍcloud
فيin كُلِّevery أُفقٍhorizon رايَةٌa banner وَرَعيلُand a troop
And from each cloud’s lightning there appeared
On every horizon a banner and a troop,
حَتّىuntil تَهادىswayed gently كُلُّevery خوطَةِtender bough أَيكَةٍa grove
رَيّاsated with water وَغَصَّتand brimmed تَلعَةٌa ravine وَمَسيلُand a watercourse
Until each tender bough of the grove swayed,
Sated with water, and ravine and watercourse brimmed.
عَطَفَbent الأَراكَةَthe arak tree فَاِنثَنىso it bowed شُكراًin gratitude لَهُto it
طَرَباًin rapture وَرَجَّعَand echoed فيin الغُصونِthe branches هَديلُcooing
It bent the arak tree, which bowed in thanks to it,
In rapture, while cooing echoed through the branches.
فَالرَوضُso the garden مُهتَزُّswaying المَعاطِفِthe flanks نَغمَةًto a melody
نَشوانُintoxicated يَعطِفُهُbends it الصَباthe east wind فَيَميلُso it leans
So the garden sways its flanks to a melody,
Intoxicated; the east wind bends it, and it leans.
رَيّانُwell-watered فَضَّضَهُsilvered it النَدىthe dew ثُمَّthen اِنجَلىcleared away
عَنهُfrom it فَذَهَّبَthen gilded صَفحَتَيهِits two sides أَصيلُlate afternoon
Well-watered, it was silvered by the dew, which then lifted
From it, and late-afternoon light gilded both its sides.
وَاِرتَدَّand turned back يَنظُرُgazing فيthrough نِقابِa veil غَمامَةٍa cloud
طَرفٌan eye يُمَرِّضُهُmakes it languid النُعاسُdrowsiness كَليلُweary
And through a cloud’s veil there gazed again
An eye, weary, made languid by drowsiness,
ساجٍstill كَماas يَرنوgazes إِلىtoward عُوّادِهِhis visitors
شاكٍan ailing man وَيَلتَمِحُand glimpses العَزيزَthe mighty one ذَليلُa lowly man
Still, as toward his visitors gazes
An ailing man, and a lowly man glimpses the mighty.
