He rode by night, plunging at a gallop through each wave
Cast forth by a green sea of night.

And no companion save a keen Indian-steel sword,
And a straight spear, supple when brandished, [probably dark-brown].
وَأَطلَسُand a dust-gray wolf زَوّارٌa frequent visitor مَعَwith اللَيلِthe night أَغبَشٌdusky

And a dust-gray wolf, a dusky, frequent visitor by night,
Moved behind the veils of darkness, disguising himself.
تَثاءَبَhe yawned مِنfrom مَسِّthe touch of الطَوىhunger فَهوَso he يَشتَكيcomplains

He yawned at hunger's touch, and so he complains,
Then howls, enfolded by a bitter, shrieking crosswind.
وَدونَand barring أَمانيهِhis desires شَرارَةُa spark لَهذَمٍa keen spear

And between him and his desires lies a keen spear's spark;
He turns a matching spark upon it whenever he looks.
فَمِنso from جَوعَةٍa pang of hunger تُغريهِtempts him بيtoward me فَهوَso he مُدَّنٍdrawing near

So hunger, tempting him toward me, makes him draw near,
And fear, turning him away from me, makes him hold back.
