بُشرىglad tidings كَماas أَسفَرَbrightened وَجهُthe face of الصَباحmorning
وَاِستَشرَفَand gazed toward الرائِدُthe scout بَرقاًlightning أَلاحflashed
Glad tidings, as the face of morning brightened,
Good tidings, as the face of morning dawned
And the scout looked toward lightning that flashed.
And the scout glimpsed a flashing light
وَاِرتَجَزَand chanted الرَعدُthunder يَمُجُّspouting النَدىdew
رَيّاin drenching abundance وَيَحدوand drives with song بِمَطاياwith the mounts of الرِياحthe winds
And thunder chanted, spouting dew
And thunder rumbled, wetting the dew
In drenching abundance, driving the winds' mounts with song.
Flowing, racing with the winds’ steeds
فَدَنَّرَso gilded with dinars الزَهرُthe blossoms مُتونَthe backs of الرُبىthe hills
وَدَرهَمَand silvered with dirhams القَطرُthe rain بُطونَthe hollows of البِطاحthe broad plains
So blossoms studded the hills' backs with dinars,
So the flowers nodded in the hills’ laps
And raindrops studded the hollows of the plains with dirhams.
And raindrops pattered on the sand dunes
هَبَّتit blew رَواحاًat evening وَهيَand it was نَفّاحَةٌfragrance-wafting
فَطابَso grew sweet ريحاًin scent نَشرُthe wafted fragrance of ذاكَthat الرَواحevening
It blew at evening, wafting fragrance,
Breezes blew, exhaling gently
So sweet was the fragrance wafted through that evening.
Making the air fragrant, spreading that scent
أَفصَحَsang clearly غِرّيدٌa songbird بِهاin it مُطرِبٌenchanting

نَفَشَّspread out مِنfrom طِرسٍa written page قُدامىthe primary feathers of جَناحa wing
An enchanting songbird sang clearly within it,
A songbird chirped melodiously
Unfurling a wing's primary feathers from a written page.
Bursting out from the feathers of its wings
فَهَلso did تَرىdo you think أَسمَعَmake hear غُصنَthe branch of النَقاthe sand dune
فَهَزَّso shook مِنfrom عِطفَيهِits two sides هَزَّa tremor of اِرتِياحdelight
So did it, do you think, make the sand-dune's branch hear,
Does it see the branch of the wild plum tremble
So it shook both its sides in a tremor of delight?
Swaying its supple boughs happily?
أَمor هَلdid سَرىtravel by night يُنعِشُreviving غُصنَthe branch of الرُبىthe hills
فَمَجَّso spouted ريقَthe saliva of الطَلِّdew ثَغرُthe mouth of الأَقاحthe daisies
Or did it travel by night, reviving the hills' bough,
Or did a zephyr go to revive the branch of myrtle
So the daisies' mouth spouted the dew's saliva?
So the new buds smiled, mouths of blossoms?
عِزٌّglory تَهادىswayed بِالقَناwith the spears هِزَّةًin a tremor
وَاِختالَand strutted بِالجُردِwith sleek steeds المَذاكيfull-grown مِراحin high spirits
Glory swayed with the trembling of the spears,
Glory sways the spear with pride
And strutted with sleek, full-grown steeds in high spirits.
While the splendid religion raised the banner
فَطاوَلَso rivaled in height النَجمُthe star مَنارَthe beacon of الهُدىguidance
وَأَحرَزَand secured الدينُfaith مُعَلّىthe highest-winning one القِداحof the lottery arrows
So the star rivaled the beacon of guidance in height,
And the people came together; none disobeyed
And faith won the highest of the lottery arrows.
The wise leader’s righteous opinion
وَالتَأَمَand was healed الشِعبُthe rift وَماand not إِنat all (emphasis) عَداstrayed beyond

And the rift was healed; never strayed
Best leader whose presence in the two holy sites
The Commander of the Faithful's judgment from what was right.
Is seriousness and vigor filling the expanse
خَيرُthe finest إِمامٍimam دامَever remained فيamid عَسكَرَيthe two armies of

جَدٍّgood fortune وَجِدٍّand resolve مِلءُfilling صَدرِthe breast of البَراحthe open plain
The finest imam, ever amid the twin armies of
Who sneezes with a zealous nose; to him
Good fortune and resolve, filling the breast of the open plain.
Every living cheek humbly kneels
يَعطِسُhe sneezes عَنfrom أَنفٍa nose حَمِيٍّfiercely proud لَهُof his

He sneezes from his fiercely proud nose,
He thundered, destroying them, roaring
That humbled both cheeks of every tribe in open combat.
So not even two nanny goats clashed there
أَرعَدَhe thundered فيin تُدميرَTudmir زَجراًas a rebuke لَهاto it
فَماso no لِعَنزَينِfor two goats هُناكَthere اِنتِطاحhead-butting
He thundered in Tudmir, rebuking it,
His voice drowned out their voices
So no two goats there butt heads.
A lion’s roar is not a jackal’s yelp
وَغَضَّand subdued مِنfrom أَصواتِهاits voices صَوتُهُhis voice
إِنَّindeed زَئيرَthe roar of اللَيثِthe lion غَيرُis not النُباحbarking
And his voice hushed its voices:
For the lion's roar is not barking.
And he helped the son of Isam with what

حَبَّرَelegantly penned مِنfrom أَلفاظِwords of بِرِّkindness فِصاحeloquent
And he strengthened Ibn ‘Isam's back with what
He composed in eloquent, excellent phrases
He penned in eloquent words of kindness,
In a letter bearing the loftiness
فيon رُقعَةٍa page تَحمِلُbearing مِنof رِفعَةٍloftiness
لَألاءِthe shimmer of أَوضاحِthe brightness of الوُجوهِfaces الصِباحbeautiful
On a page that carries, in its loftiness,
Of bright, smiling, radiant faces
The shimmering brightness of beautiful faces.
Auspicious, if it touched hard, frozen stone
مَيمَونَةٍauspicious لَوif لَمَسَتit touched جَلمَداًa boulder
صَلداًhard and solid لَسالَwould surely flow الماءُwater عَنهُfrom it فَساحand then streamed away
Auspicious: were it to touch a boulder,
Water would flow freely from it, pouring forth
Hard and solid, water would flow from it and stream away.
So glory attends the Chosen One’s side
فَالمَجدُso glory مَمطورُrain-drenched جَنابِthe realm of المُنىhopes
وَالمُلكُand sovereignty خَفّاقُflapping جَناحِthe wing of النَجاحsuccess
So glory's realm of hopes is rain-drenched,
And sovereignty flutters the wing of success
And sovereignty flutters its wing of success.
Baring white faces like the full moon

It unveils the white faces of sword-blades,
Fiercely gleaming eyes of spears
In might, and gazes from the eyes of spears.
White and shining, the brow of the exalted
أَبيَضُfair وَضّاحُradiant جَبينِthe brow of العُلىgreatness

Fair, with the radiant brow of greatness,
Open-handed, outstretched, right hand of generosity
Joyful, with the right hand of generosity outstretched.
So say to those who blamed him, lost:
فَقُلso say لِمَنto whoever ساجَلَهُrivaled him ضِلَّةًin folly
ماسُدفَةُwhat is the darkness of اللَيلِnight وَضَوءُand the light of الصَباحmorning
So say to whoever rivaled him in folly:
Is the darkness of night like the dawn’s light?
What is night's darkness beside the light of morning?
How can you repay him? Can they be equal,
كَيفَhow يُكافيهِcan he match him وَهَلand can تَستَويbe equal
خُشونَةُthe harshness of الجِدِّearnestness وَلينُand the softness of المُزاحjest
How can he match him? And can these be equal:
The gravity of seriousness and the softness of jest?
The harshness of earnestness and the softness of jest?
Distinct qualities have emerged
تَمَيَّزَتstood apart مِنfrom شيمَةٍone disposition شيمَةٌanother disposition
إِنَّindeed الأَجاجَbrine الصِرفَunmixed غَيرُis not القَراحpure fresh water
One disposition stands apart from another;
Pure wine is not bitter aloe juice
Indeed, unmixed brine is not pure fresh water.
My fighting him was to guard against harm
جالَدتُهُI fought him مِنas حاسِرٍan unarmored man دارِعاًan armored man
كَفاهُsufficed him حَملُwielding الرَأيِjudgment حَملَwielding السِلاحweapons
I fought him, unarmored against an armored man;
While upholding the way is bearing arms
Wielding judgment sufficed him instead of wielding weapons.
Where is a deep green sea compared
وَأَينَand where مِنbeside بَحرٍa sea طَماsurged أَخضَرٍgreen
ماسالَwhat flowed مِنfrom أَوشالِthe seepages of بيضِwhite الصِفاحstone slabs
And where, beside a swelling green sea,
To the spate rushing down white slopes?
Is what trickled from the seepages of white stone slabs,
It rose in waves; whoever sits firmly atop it,
حَمَتgrew hot وَمَنand whoever يَقعُدُholds back بِهِhim جَدُّهُhis fortune
فَكُلُّthen every زِندٍfire-stick فيin يَدَيهِhis two hands شَحاحmiserly
Grown hot? And for whoever is held back by his fortune,
In his hands every spear is sharp.
Every fire-stick in his hands is miserly.
So do not sleep while an envious rival
فَلاso let not تَنَمsleep عَينُكَyour eye مِنagainst حاسِدٍan envier
غَضَّdrew in حِراناًbalking مِنfrom عِنانِthe rein of الجِماحunruliness
So let your eye not sleep, on guard against an envier
Pulls the reins, jealous of the wings’ flight
Who, balking, has drawn in the rein of his unruliness.
A harmful wound has weakened him
أَمَضَّهُsorely pained him جُرحٌa wound دَخيلٌdeeply lodged بِهِin him
إِنَّindeed الرَزاياcalamities مِنamong أَمَضِّthe sorest of الجِراحwounds
A wound lodged deep within him has stung him sorely;
Wounds of fate are most penetrating
For calamities are among the sorest of wounds.
Tears slipped out furtively
فَرَقرَقَso made shimmer العَبرَةَthe tear فيin خَجلَةٍshame
وَرُبَّماand sometimes يُمزَجُis mixed بِالماءِwith water راحwine
So he made the tear shimmer in shame,
Sometimes intermingled with sighs
And sometimes wine is mixed with water.
None chokes with tears but the passionate
ماnot غَصَّhe choked بِالدَمعَةِon the tear إِلّاexcept هَفاhe faltered
فَاِنظُرso look تَجِدyou will find ثُمَّthen السِوارَthe bracelet الوِشاحthe sash
He never choked on a tear without faltering.
You see, then the jeweled bracelet revealed
So look: then you will find the bracelet to be the sash.
