وَقَدand indeed غَشِيَcovered النَبتُthe vegetation بَطحاءَهُits pebbly plain
كَبَدوِlike the emergence of العِذارِthe cheek’s down بِخَدٍّon a cheek أَسيلِsmooth
And vegetation has covered its pebbly plain,
The grass has covered its plains
like the first growth of down on a smooth cheek.
Like cheeks moist with flowing tears
وَقَدand indeed وَلَّتِturned away الشَمسُthe sun مُحتَثَّةًurged onward
إِلىtoward الغَربِthe west بِطَرفٍwith an eye كَحيلِdarkened with kohl
And the sun has turned away, hastening
And the sun has turned away hastily
toward the west with a kohl-darkened eye,
To the west with a sleepy eye
كَأَنَّas though سَناهاher radiance عَلىupon نَهرِهِits river
بَقاياremnants نَجيعٍcrimson blood بِسَيفٍon a sword صَقيلِpolished
as though her radiance upon its river
As if its teeth on the river
were remnants of crimson blood on a polished sword.
Are the remnants of an army with polished swords
