وَالريحُand the wind خافِقَةُfluttering الجَناحِthe wing بَليلُdamp and cool
And the sun is sick, its brow pale,
The sun is pale-faced, sickly,
And the wind flutters its wing, damp and cool.
The wind flutters its wings in the night,
وَالبَرقُand the lightning مُنخَزِلٌcrumpling يُكِبُّfalls forward لِوَجهِهِonto its face
وَيَمُجَّand spews روحَthe spirit الراحِthe wine مِنهُby it قَتيلُslain
And lightning crumples, falling face-first,
Lightning scowls and turns its face,
And spews the spirit of wine, slain by it.
As the soul of comfort dies by its hand.

And the cup is a chestnut steed that has galloped in
The goblet has a blond rim that glimmers
Sweat of bubbles streaming over it.
With beads of sweat rolling down.

A moon carries it round; both he and his cup have
The moon pursues it, for the cup and its face
A radiant face and a honeyed mouth.
Are most tender, its smile sweetened.
شاكيfully armed السِلاحِthe weapons لِقَدِّهِfor his stature وَلِطَرفِهِand for his glance
رُمحٌa spear أَصَمُّsolid وَصارِمٌand a keen sword مَسلولُunsheathed
Fully armed: his stature and his glance are
My friend complains of its sword and edge,
A solid spear and an unsheathed sword.
A spear, deaf and unsheathed.
وَأَخٍand a friend تَهُزُّsways لَهُfor him العُلىglory أَعطافَهاits shoulders

And a friend for whom glory sways its shoulders,
A brother whose stately height sways,
So he seems a sprig of basil and wine.
As though he were fragrant basil.

I suckled with him at the cup of wine; and between us
I suckled at the wine’s cup ‘twixt us
Were a garden of conversation’s fruit and an east breeze.
A garden bloomed in the paradise of talk.

With generosity’s swaying shoulders, as though he were
The inclination of his genteel sides seems
A dew-drenched bough whose blossom breathes.
A branch breathing light set free.

The lines of his palm shed roses like dew for it,
The petals of his palm distill dew,
Forever; and the hollow of his right hand is wet.
The belly of his right hand overflowing.

Bright-browed, and the keen sword smiles;
Serene of brow, his sword smiles,
Lean-bellied, and the lance is withered thin.
Fateful, languorous, withering in its sheath.

People have testimonies about him in their speech,
In him, people find eloquent testaments,
And the cleaving sword’s striking edge bears notches.
And in the strike of his sword, remnants.

In his hand, the armored warriors’ souls are drawn up
With his palm he quenches the souls of warriors,
By a long rope, tightly twisted from spear-shafts.
A torrent pouring out the valleys.

There, where a noonday heat from fierce spear-thrusts
Where the whinny of the piercing blades sounds,
Blazes, and the banner’s shade affords midday rest.
Sheltered, and in the shade of banners, rest.
وَالنَقعُand the battle-dust أَدهَمُa black steed لِلرِماحِfor the spears بِوَجهِهِon its face
غُرَرٌwhite blazes تَلوحُgleam وَلِلسُيوفِand for the swords حُجولُwhite stockings
And battle-dust is a black steed, with spears on its face as
The plain turns red for the spears on its face,
Gleaming white blazes, and swords as white stockings.
Temptations glisten, swords blaze.

And the horses are a line of script, dotted with spearheads,
Horses inscribe occult letters with their tongues,
And vowel-marked by the keen tongues of sword-blades.
Encrypted by the tongues of mountain gazelles.
