وَأَهيَفٍand a slender youth قامَrose يَسقيserves drink
وَالسُكرُand drunkenness يَعطِفُbends قَدَّهhis frame
And a slender youth rose to serve wine,
And drunkenness bent his frame.
وَقَدand already تَرَنَّحَswayed غُصناًlike a bough
وَاِحمَرَّتِand turned red الكَأسُthe cup وُردَهhis rose
And he swayed like a bough,
And the cup, his rose, blushed red.
وَأَلهَبَand set aflame السُكرُdrunkenness خَدّاًa cheek
أَورىkindled بِهِupon it الوَجدُlonging زَندَهits fire-stick
And drunkenness set a cheek aflame,
Where longing kindled its fire-stick.
فَكادَso he almost يَشرَبُdrinks نَفسيmy soul
وَكُدتُand I almost أَشرَبُdrink خَدَّهhis cheek
So he almost drank my soul,
And I almost drank his cheek.
